Weighing versus measuring

There are a lot of reasons why I don’t do intuitive eating, and one of them is that my eyes are so much bigger than my stomach, and the other is the discrepancy between the stated serving size and the actual.

I always weigh my food. Even if it is something like crackers where the serving size is 15 crackers and also gives a weight. I have found that these usually err on the larger side of what the weight is.
Same thing with oats. I weigh out 40 grams for my 1/2 cup serving. If you put that 40 grams into a 1/2 cup measure, guess what? It does not come up to the top of the cup. Could be settlement, could be moisture content of the oats. Whatever – but if I were to fill the 1/2 cup measure, I could easily be getting in a lot of extra calories.

I also weigh out things like peanut butter and mayo, or any type of sauce.

What I really need to do is not eat the food that is supposed to go back into the container after I remove the extra from the scale LOL!

I have to get in the habit of measuring and weighing my food. I know I am putting more on my plate than I should. I thought I could just eyeball it. LOL Have a good evening.

This is so true. I have to get my scale out of the basement and start using it again. Thanks for posting.

Haha, I weigh out my peanut butter then lick the spoon! Totally defeats the purpose 😛

That is very interesting. I haven’t been disciplined enough to pick up that habit yet. I will get out my measuring spoons every once in a while, but even when I first started WW, I wasn’t devout about it.

    it’s so personal huh?
that which would make one person NUTS (me and my in a rut workout routine. not mixing it up all the time) is necessary and perfect for another.

My sister weights everything and it’s the only way to go for her…the problem is if *I* am around I end up eating what she yanks off the scale 🙂

I never thought about the difference between weighing vs. measuring. I’ve always counted the serving size. This is a really good point and I do think there is a scale in the back of one of my cupboards. We’ll see 🙂

I weight things a lot when I’m cooking and trying to add up the points for something. I usually measure things like cereal. My food scale is only accurate to 5g, so if a serving is 40g, I might measure 38 or 42 and it would still say 40g. I haven’t gotten anywhere near my goal yet (as I just started my journey last month), but it’s certainly something to think about as I get closer to that point.
