Snack bender

Midweek (my Thursday 🙂  )  Snack last night did not seem to help me get or stay asleep.  I actually was tired when I went to bed a little early and thought I would fall asleep easily, but then my eyes popped open and I was pretty restless.  Got up early to hit the gym.  Happy lady in the locker room  ready to lift!

Today was workout B for January:

  • Chin ups: 2 sets of 2
  • Barbell split squats:  3 sets of 8 at 65 pounds
  • Underhand grip lat pull down:  3 sets of 8 at 60 pounds
  • Step ups:  3 sets of 8 with 30 pound dumbbells (each)
  • Bent over reverse fly:  3 sets of 8 with 10 pound DB
  • Incline dumbbell chest fly:  3 sets of 8 with 25# DBs

Then 40 minutes of walking.  I think I need to try a barbell for the step ups, because I just can’t hold the 30# dumbbells.  My grip gets tired and so do my forearms.

John and I then went for the requisite bagel!  I was different today and got cinnamon raisin with plain cream cheese.

I could tell today was going to be a tough food day after I got back.  It’s the tired/not enough sleep thing.  I decided to protein up for lunch to try to head it off – so I had protein waffles with added protein powder:

Amazing how this same recipe makes 3 smallish pancakes, yet poofs up in the waffle iron to this giant monster!  The extra protein didn’t help.

Then I proceeded to snack in the afternoon on:

  • Balance bar
  • latte
  • 1 christmas cookie (nutmeg log)
  • 2 ramekins of chocolate chip/peanut mixture
  • 1 serving of FSTG chips

Don’t you love it?  😳  I’ll be honest, it’s stress and tiredness.  The house thing is moving along.  I talked with my tenant last night to let him know of the plans.  My rental house will be on the market at the end of the week (YAY!!).    However, with only 1/2 the money coming in for it due to one tenant leaving, it’s going to be tough money-wise until it sells, so that makes me eat.  Okay, that doesn’t *make* me eat, I just do….  I just wish I knew how long it would take.  That’s the control freak in me.  I can’t control how many buyers there are out there or make someone buy it.  I can only send out as many positive vibes as I can 😀  How long can one cross fingers and toes before they get stuck that way?

John’s football dinner was tonight.  Last regular season dinner.  So much for my crazy picks in the hopes I could win! 😀

He chose Arthurs:

It was so warm and cozy in here.  Much warmer than we keep our house set at (66).  I had a salad:

and split a calzone with John.

I love the small pizza joints around here.  So good.  That’s feta cheese in there, btw.

Needless to say I am full right now.  I’ll probably wake up with a food hangover tomorrow.  Is there a cure for that??

Question:  Do you have any insomnia tips?

Being tired always makes me extra hungry!

Lori starting next week I am going to put up true weight loss stories on Wed to coincide with my Biggest Loser recaps, would you be willing to let me share your story? I am doing my brother in law next Wed, but would love to put up your story the following week. If interested email me at mnowac@gmail.com with a before/after pic and a little blurb about how you did it. I am coming up with 4 or 5 questions to ask everyone, I’d get those to you to answer.

Want to borrow my kids? They are delightful insomnia prevention devices. 😉 Don’t know that I have anything different to add; my usual things are hot herbal tea and reading in bed until I am ready to drop off to sleep. If my mind starts buzzing, I do this mind-clearing exercise: Let’s say I’m worrying about a meeting later in the week. I’ll make an “appointment” with myself, just in my mind, to worry about it at a specific time the next morning: “You can worry about that meeting at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning.” Or you might try some other meditation exercise…as Wilbur noted in Charlotte’s web, when your stomach is empty and your mind is full, it’s hard to sleep.

I have been having trouble sleeping this week too. I get really grumpy when I don’t get enough sleep…
I also want to snack more. I think there really is a correlation between lack of sleep and snackiness. For me, the best thing I can do after a day of over snacking is to get an my elliptical for a good sweaty several mile work out and drink lots of water too… I am still working on trying to balance everything. I think it will be a lifelong process…

No insomnia tips here. I’ve never experienced it. Up until recently I would sleep through the night with no issues. No all of a sudden I’m waking up with hot flashes. I’m way too young for this. I don’t know what’s going on.

That’s it! I just told hubby I’m buying a waffle iron. Do you do anything different with the recipe?

I wish I had some tips for you on the insomnia – I can definitely tell you what does NOT help – a 2yo little girl who likes to kick AND snuggle with you all at the same time. ;o)

I don’t have tips for you, I’m sorry. I usually sleep well with here and there a night that I sleep less well. I have to say that when I’m tired I usually start eating more. The only thing I read is that when you can’t sleep it’s better to get up till you’re tired instead of lying in bed. Have to say I never tried that myself so don’t know if it works.

Hope you find a solution for your problem soon.

The Calzone looks delicious. I don’t have any insomnia tips. I fall asleep right away unless I have something major going on in my life that I’m worried about. When that happens, I take some PM medicine to ensure a good night’s sleep. But I’m not sure I should be giving that advice! 🙂

Man, you lift some heavy weights! Good for you! My legs got huge with heavier weights when I was younger. Now, I can lift a bit heavier again due to age & the changes in how the body works BUT I still can’t go too heavy or I build bigger than I want to.

Now of course, that food looks great!!!! Stress really takes a toll but you know what you are doing & eating so at least you are not fooling yourself! Hope the house sells!

I don’t have much experience with insomnia. But my daughter has. She went so far as to try Ambien. She says don’t do it. The side effects are awful. I’ll give you the reccommendations i gave her from a mommy viewpoint…..some don’t apply to you…….like i tell her to run, tire herself out but you do run so….i tell her to meditate but she’s at that age that all i get is an eyeroll from her….at my age i KNOW meditation can help you clear your mind, breathe, perhaps enough to fall asleep. Read, I always read two to ten pages of a book on my nightstand. Its a ritual that helps put me to sleep. I hope you find an answer to your insomnia soon. I know being tired makes me snack more. Oh one last reccommendation that i noticed no one else mentioned yet and maybe i shouldn’t but oh well you can slam me for it later. What about ……you know……..S _ X???? LOL!

Lori, I have a suggestion for your insomnia. A long time ago when I used to go on more women’s retreats, I had a terrible time sleeping away from home. At the time, my friend was selling Herbalife, and she gave me some of their ‘Sleep Now’ caplets. They worked fantastically. Just relaxed me enough to get to sleep. No hangover like when I take some of the night time cold medicines. When I ran out (and she no longer sold Herbalife) I noticed that the main ingredient was melatonin. I got a big bottle at Costco really cheap. I seldom have any problems sleeping anymore.

Although, in the summertime, I routinely don’t get as much sleep as I would like to. My tack there is to not worry about it. To just accept that that is as much sleep as my body needs. But I am sympathetic. Because I really really don’t like those days when I feel tired all day long. And I don’t take naps. I don’t like them.

  11. Marisa (Loser for Life)

Sorry, no insomnia tips – I could sleep like the dead if I didn’t have kids waking me up at night! Anyway, I think that you should feel good about knowing what causes your snack attack. You are aware of it and I think that’s half the battle right there! It’s the mindless, automatic stuff that becomes hard to figure out or manage. You are doing great, Lori, with all the stress you’re under! Hope you get some rest tonight and have happy dreams of a sold sign on the house 😀

Tiredness and stress combined? Complete snack-attack! I hope the house sells quickly.

I could lose myself in that calzone! I lived near an amazing calzone place for many years, and after a lot of experimentation, I also settled on feta as the perfect add-on. Yum!!

Hi…I’m with Barb and Jody: if you’re over 40, have your hormone levels checked. You could definitely be heading down the Menopause on-ramp. Been there, done that, including the many nights of little sleep and sweating. If you’re not yet 40 (sorry: to me you look about 30, but knowing a little of your story makes me think you just might be older!), then before you get into bed, write down what you’re worrying about and leave the list in the kitchen. Tell yourself “I’ll come back to this tomorrow”, and LEAVE it there.

Okay – I love you for saying that I look like I am in my 30s!! 😀 I am 41 and did have my hormone levels checked in Sept and all were okay. Although the doc said perimenopause was likely on the way…..

  14. Dawn

We sound so much alike Lori lol. Sorry you can’t sleep, me either. I don’t really have any tips other than when you feel tired in the evening just go to bed. It seems I wait past my point of tired and then I’m wide awake.

I can’t hold onto the darn dumbbells well with the step ups either, they rip my hands up too. I bought gloves but they were to big and bulky so I’m back to just suffering through. Maybe it’s time to look for thinner gloves.

I made protein pancakes this morning for my son but he didn’t eat them guess I should have tried waffles.

    Hope you sleep better tonight.

  15. Diane Fit to the Finish

I struggle with insomnia on occasion. Usually what I do is just don’t fight it. If I can’t go to sleep then I get up and read. If I wake up in the middle of the night I turn the tv on mute and watch mindless nothings until I get sleepy again. It’s no fun!

    66!? I would freeze. I need it at least 70 😉

I’m sorry you’re feeling stressed right now 🙁 Definitely not helping the sleep situation, which doesn’t help the snacking, and becomes a cycle. Remember how I used to have sleeping problems? Well they have gotten A LOT better ever since leaving the radio station. I can sleep straight through the night now, 7.5 hours, no problem. I think it’s sometimes sitting back and looking at the things in your life that are hanging heavy on you, and doing what you can to solve them. Selling the house should help a lot! (I hope!)

When I cant sleep I usually just turn on the tv. I try NOT to sleep and watch a movie all the way through and I always fall asleep in the middle of it.
