Lifting and drizzly!

Slept quite well last night.  I started taking 5-HTP before bed, which is like serotonin.  If I remember to take it every night, I should be able to see if this helps me sleep!

Monday morning at the gym.  It was not too busy for whatever reason.  Monday’s are usually pretty crowded.  Lifting workout:

  • Dumbbell pliet squats:  3 sets of 10 with 35# dumbbell
  • Wide grip lat pulldown:  3 sets of 10 at 60 pounds
  • Alternating lunges with bar:  3 sets of 10 with 35# bar
  • Horizontal cable wood chop:  3 sets of 10 at 30#
  • YTWL:  3 sets of 10 with 10# dumbbells
  • Chin ups:  3 sets of 2

Note I did the chinups last because someone parked themselves on the squat cage for quite a while.  It was hard doing these last!  I also banged my knees on the bar on the first chin up, because I forgot to move it back onto the pegs as the person using it did not do that.   Ouchie!

Then I treadmilled for a while.  I walked a mile and jogged for 2 miles.

I was thinking pumpkin during the last part of the workout 😀  Decided to do quick cook steel cut oats with 1/2 cup of pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice and egg whites stirred in:

Topped with jam and toasted pecans.  It was so good on a day like today:

Rainy and dreary!  Blech.  It’s pretty warm, though – at least the upper 40s.  The ground is frozen though, so there is no where for the rain to go!

I had cooked chicken ready to go for lunch and decided on a curry chicken pita:

  • 2 oz of chicken chopped
  • 1/2 of a small granny smith apple chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of sliced almonds
  • 1 tablespoon of light mayo
  • curry powder.

Mixed all up and placed in a Josef’s pita with some lettuce.  Tasty!

Work has been very busy!  It makes me even more ready for vacation.  I will talk tomorrow about what my strategy is for eating and the cruise tomorrow.  Was going to do that today, but got swamped and I still have to go run errands tonight!

Break time was more wonderful things for a chilly rainy day:

Dark chocolate mint Attune bar:

90 calories of dark chocolate goodness.

John got called for jury duty today, and he ended up sitting on the the jury!  Last one picked, too.  He decided to go ahead and do it because the case is only supposed to be 3 days long and won’t interfere with our vacay!  It’s been weird to be alone all day with him gone.

I made a quick stirfry of broccoli, a small potato, 1 egg, feta cheese and some coconut oil with seasoning.  It was pretty good!

One of those messy dinners 😀

Off to run errands!

Question:  What is your dreary day comfort?

I have to be honest – that weather would make me depressed! Snow and rain are not my idea of happy days! My dinners often look messy too. Last night I combined brown rice with some already cooked leftover chicken but it ended up a pretty dreary looking mess. I should have put some broccoli in it to brighten it up!

I know you are looking forward to your cruise.

Too many days in a row like this are depressing! But that makes the sun even more enjoyable when it shines 😀

Today was a dreary day here as well. I wanted my waffles for breakfast, but wanted to use up some stuff in the fridge so I had chicken salad in a flat out w/ strawberries. It was very similar to your wrap. Lunch was spaghetti squash with light sauce. Dinner was a comfort meal of turkey meatloaf, roasted butternut squash and green beans.

Looking forward to your cruise post. 🙂

Like you, coffee is the perfect thing for a rainy day for me. 🙂 That and then soups for meals.

I bought a sweet potato and more laughing cow cheese to try your creation of a baked sweet potato with the cheese. It looked so yummy! I’ll let you know if I liked it.

I am really liking that combo. My hubby not so much. He is still a brown sugar and cinnamon on the sweet potato kind of guy.

I like that combo in an egg scramble. I am going to use the leftovers from my cauliflower potato bake in an egg scramble tomorrow.

I’ve been away from reading for so long, but I am basically caught up now (well, almost)! Congrats on being asked to participate in the Open Sky Project. I think it’s fabulous that the procedes are going to the earthquake victims right now. Also, I love Locks of Love… I have donated my own hair to them many, many times. Good for your sister for doing that! It, too, is such a worthy cause.

I’m glad to be back reading regularly!!!

hiding inside with a trashy novel or lots of bravo tv.
alas, most days when its dreary like that I simply yank on my brightbright rain boots and hit the streets.

if only we could just cancel the day 🙂

We had the foggy, rainy weather for a about a week. Yesterday it all changed and we got snow and major winds, so we had a blizzard! It’s terrible. I have to say by the time I got home from the hectic drive, I did snack on some trail mix!

I have to be really careful about how late I have coffee, or I have trouble sleeping too! I usually have my last cup just after lunch, no later or I am doomed! I hadn’t heard of using 5-HTP for promoting sleep – I will be interested in hearing how that works for you. Have a great time on your vacation and enjoy a break from the dreary weather!

Lori, I so feel for you on doing those chins last! I am like you.. got to try those babies first before I wear myself out! 🙂 Congrats! And I bump into bars & stuff all the time in the gym.. ouch is right!!!

The weather sure looks dreary. We had all the storming last week here in CA & more expected today. Me, computer work…. I need to get a life! 🙂

A cruise! That sounds like a blast. Can’t wait to hear more about it — and your strategies. I’ve heard cruises are jam-packed with activities and athletics and all sorts of fun things to do (if one wants to).

On rainy days like the one you had yesterday, I have to be very careful not to overeat. If I stay home and cuddle up with the cat and a good book, I have to guard against snacking and grazing. Very tempting for me to see what’s in the kitchen when I’m home alone. Better that I go to the gym!

We’ve had blech weather here for weeks with the sun coming out only once in a while. It IS getting on my nerves BUT …
I love a rainy, gloomy day *once in a while*.
They’re designated movie or book days and usually a lot of time spend on the Mac surfing.
And like the past few days … LOTS of coffee! Coffee is excellent for decluttering and that’s been my rainy/gloomy day activity for the past few days. It’s kind of a blessing because I don’t feel like I’m missing anything outside. 🙂
The decluttering actually IS a comfort as it’s getting me to a calm, clean & serene environment.
I think it’s easier to enjoy the kind of life you have with a relaxing background which you seem to have.
Hope you see some sunshine soon, Lori!

Yep – egg whites for protein. It doesn’t change the taste, but the texture becomes lighter and fluffier. That’s always good for someone who is a bulk eater!

We finally have a day of real sunshine and clear blue skies after almost two weeks of rain or clouds. It’s glorious and I have windows open!!

But mostly, this time of year, we have rain. If I had my druthers, I’d be curled up on the couch with a good book and endless cups of (caffeine free) tea. With a hot bath every third rainy day.

  13. Susan

The weather was JUST like that here today and I made myself french toast – so I guess that would be it 😉

Oddly, I’ve always wanted to be picked for jury duty. I’m a super nerd and am fascinated by the court system (even contemplated law school – until my lawyer father talked me out of it) Now that I’m no longer a reporter, I can actually be picked!

I used to take 5HTP towards the end of my depression, it’s a nice natural mood elevator.
If you’re looking for something to help you sleep though, you should go for melatonin. Totally natural and calming in the evening.
