Injured….

Hello from bed.

Grrr…..

The morning started out okay.  I had a protein shake:

and then biked to the gym to do a light lifting workout.   Near the end of the workout, I was moving a bench that was on wheels.  It isn’t even heavy.  I turned to look behind me to see if I was going to bump into anything, and I felt a pop on the left side of my lower back.  It really hurt and I had to rest for a few minutes.  Definitely felt muscular, though.  I was pretty much done with the workout, so I took some Advil that I had in my bag.  John had met me at the gym and I thought I was okay to bike.  Probably a mistake, as the Advil masked pain which would likely have made me not bike.

Went to Panera, where I had a jalapeno and cheddar bagel.

Yum – although I could have used more cheddar :).   My back still felt okay, although a little sore to go home.  After we got home, I could barely walk when I got off the bike.   That was fairly alarming. The pain was excrutiating.  I can only lie flat on my back or on one side without pain, so working was out for the day.    Decided to just be upstairs in bed.  I can have the laptop by on my stomach to keep from going totally bananas.

John was a sweetie and brought me some lunch.  Greek yogurt, granola and strawberries!

Nice thing about being upstairs is that it keeps me from snacking….. Gotta look at the bright side cause I feel so bad.

So, that meant spending most of the day trying to self-diagnose.  The pain comes from the left lower back muscle area, but radiates into my thigh in the front, which is weird.  It is some of the worst pain I have ever felt.  Thinking psoas muscle or tensor fascia lata

John has just been super.  He brought me a latte, which I only finished half of before I fell asleep for a while.

He also went out and got me Aleve, which I am terrified to take, as my FIL ended up with stomach ulcers and needed emergency surgery after taking too much.

I think it dampened my appetite for a while, as I didn’t eat dinner until close to 7, which is pretty rare for me.  Again, my knight in shining armor cooked for me.  I kept it simple.

Wish I could enjoy dinner in bed more.  It’s hard to eat lying down.

Here is hoping I feel a lot better tomorrow.  I can’t bear the thought of going to the doctor pain wise.  Maybe a cortisone shot is in  order….

Oh Lori, this is terrible. Boo to being injured. Do you have a chiropractor you can see?

I hope you are able to control the pain tonight and get some rest. Have you tried icing it as well? Poor Lori.

Sending you hugs, but not squishy ones today.

Sorry to hear this! I hope you’re not laid up too long! Does seem like the simplest things end up causing the worst things.

OHNO! I am so sorry to hear you’re out of commission 🙁 Hopefully it’s bearable enough tomorrow that you can make it to the doctor…

I went to a jazz concert tonight and thought of you! It was a 21-piece ensemble, they played a mix of old standards and some newer hits. Fabulous 🙂

Oh geez! I’m so sorry you are stuck in bed. I’ve had back injuries before and know how bad it can be. A little bit of Alleve won’t cause any ulcers. I was taking four a day without any problems (and I have IBS). Hopefully you’ll hop out of bed in the morning!

Getting injured is a big fear of mine and I would probably do it like you did – NOT doing a deadlift or something really strenuous, but twisting around. So sorry you’re hurting! I really hope it is just muscular and that it relaxes soon…you may be taking it easy for another day or so. That was sweet of John to take such good care of you – hope you feel back to normal really soon!

So sorry you got hurt! Please be gentle and take care of yourself… don’t push it! And please go to the doctor tomorrow if you’re not better!

  7. Ari

Oh no! I hope you feel better soon, and definitely go to the doctor if it doesn’t clear up! Better to know what’s wrong than aggravate it worse. Drink lots of lattes and watch lots of mindless tv! :-p

Dad gum Lori, this really upsets me. I will be praying for you tonight, that this is just a temporary hurt, and not a bigger problem.

Here’s some dachshund humor hopefully to cheer you–for a dachshund with an injured back: a big dose of prednisone and 3 days of crate rest. (I actually just did this with Sophie–didn’t blog about it because I was so worried about her.)

If its any help to hear, right before I started losing the weight, I hurt my knee really bad, and I heard/felt a pop too. It hurt so bad it took me half an hour to get my shoes on (I’m not kidding) And because I work for the med center (I think) they did every imaginable test on it, and it wasn’t anything and it eventually just got better all by itself.

But your back is nothing to fool around with. Please take care. Email me if there’s anything I can do for you.

Lori, I am so sorry to hear about your injury – it definitely doesn’t sound good. Hang in there and I hope you recover soon. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’s nothing too serious and doesn’t keep you out of commission for too long.

Big hug for you Lori, this doesn’t sound good. Don’t overdo it, don’t take too much Aleve and see a doctor if it doesn’t go away today or tomorrow.

I never had health issues with pain killers but when I was in my 30’s I had a lot of headache and used a lot of pain killers. Until I read those were addictive and taking them probably caused the headaches and I quit cold turkey and guess what: no more headaches 🙂

  16. Susan

So sorry to hear about your back. I have a bad lower back from a injury so I totally understand how bad it hurts. I agree with the others if this isn’t better by tomorrow I would go get it checked out. You don’t want to be in bad pain all weekend. My doc gave me pain meds, mucle relaxers and lower back exercises to do after the first three days…I was back to feeling better within a week or so.
    Take care.

  17. Joanne

Oh NO! Did you ice it right away? That’s the first thing to do…I have a weak back and been in and out of physical therapy (when I was 17) and then to chiropractors. Running has actually helped my back stay healthy. But I was told that immediately following the injury – ICE IT! Then I believe you may do the heat wraps but not sure on that one.

I sincerely hope you make a quick recovery but don’t rush it. Back problems are THE WORST! …and I was so hoping we could both bike half way (Utica-Albany) and eventually meet up this summer. 🙁

OH CRAP!!!! I understand this injury though.. did it way back when. Turning the wrong way while doing a lift…. we have to be so careful! I know those benches on wheels & they are harder to maneuver than they are heavy… I started with bridges off the floor… well, pelvic tilts until I could barely start my bridges & added in my stretching & was better within 7 days. I did it bad when I did it.. hope you are better soon!

Awww Lori I’m so sorry you hurt yourself. I’ve had stuff like that happen and then after a few days of rest I’ve felt better so I’m hoping that’s how it will work for you. That’s great how sweet John’s been at least you have a great nurse. Hope you feel better soon.

Oh Lori! I’m so sorry! I hope you are feeling better soon! Don’t wait too long to go see a doc okay??Funny how its the simple unexpected things that hurt us! I’ve heard of it happening to lots of people. (((HUGS))) just a little hug. jinx

Ouch! I hope you feel better soon. I know how you feel. I was down and out with a back injury (left side/lower back) all last week. I ended up going to the doctor who only gave me heavy duty muscle relaxers (flexeral) that knocked me out. I hope you are up and out of bed and back on the bike soon. Get well.

  22. Nancy B. Kennedy

I’m so sorry for your injury! Injuries wreak havoc with weight maintenance. I pulled three separate muscles this winter, failed to adjust my eating for my more sedentary life and gained four pounds. I was so disappointed. But I’ve doubled up on my lap swimming and have lost two of them. I’m “pulling” for you!

  23. Sandi

I’m sorry your injured! It is amazing how just one little move can cause so much pain. I hope you are feeling better today. What a sweet husband you have, so nice to take such good care of you while you are down.

  25. Diane Fit to the Finish

Lori – I’m so sorry that you have injured your back. As a fellow back problem person I’d encourage you to take it easy for a day, two max, and then get up and start moving around slowly.

    Thoughts to you!
