Chasing away the blues.

Getting better bit by bit.  I am just hoping to be walking pain free very soon.  That would be a giant step forward.  I was feeling pretty blue this morning about the whole thing.  I just wish I had a timeline, you know?

Very sad clown here….  I made a comforting bowl of banana oats this morning, topped with some Nuttzo and jam.

I don’t know if I will ever go back to not adding egg whites to my oatmeal anymore!  I am hooked.

I am looking into getting a foam roller.  I want to make sure I keep my back and leg muscles stretched out, and there is a specific roller exercise for sciatica, so that will be on the list.  I just need to find the right size roller, I guess.

Lunch was cobbled together with the last of the baby carrots, and a super unripe kiwi!

Dang, that was even more tart than the one I had last week.  No wonder they were on sale.  I need to let the other sit for a few days before eating.

One bonus to not working out in the morning is that I can start work early and be done early.  I was finished by 3!

Afternoon snack time:

One of John’s brownies.  I was going to ask for the recipe, but they really are a bit dry and not as good as they look (sorry J!).

I waddled outside  afterward to try and take a walk.  I made it this far:

Our house is the 2nd one down.  I had to turn back and come home because of the pain.  I should have gotten the crutches out for the walk, but I hadn’t needed them walking around the house.

Dinner time was some chicken topped with a laughing cow wedge and salsa – you must try this because it was soo good!

Yum!  John asked me if I wanted to go out for coffee this evening to cheer me up.  Of course I won’t say no that, as you well know.  It worked:

That’s my favorite travel mug – see how beat up it is?  I just can’t find one to replace it that is just right.  John on the other hand, has a ton of travel mugs.  Not pictured is the muffin I had with this….

Had to cover up the rose bushes tonight.  Temps are supposed to drop to 27!  Hope they make it.

Question:  Do any of you use a foam roller?

Lori you look so sad in your first picture. Your getting better each day even if it is just baby steps. I was glad to see you smiling at the coffee shop. And, good job getting out for a walk today! I hurt myself a few years ago lifting our 80lb lab into the back of the pickup truck. I wasn’t working out and lifted her wrong and ended up bent over the truck bed screaming in pain because I couldn’t move. I hurt for a good week, and then it started to loosen up. I hope you feel better soon! :0)

I have a love/hate relationship with my GoFit foam roller. It really hurts while I am “rolling out” but eventually the pain goes away and it feels wonderful to be so loose. I’m no expert on foam rollers but I’ve only ever seen one size in stores (by stores I mean Target and Omega Sports). I think mine is 36″ by 6″

I do not use a foam roller and have never even seen one. I will have to google.

Surprisingly it looks like a roll of foam…or a pool noodle.

In your first sad pic I wanted to hand you a teddy bear. Glad you were more cheery at coffee time.

    Keep on getting better!

I’m sorry you’re sad and still hurting. Your hair looks really good and you look very thin, if that makes you feel any better. Wish I could wave my magic wand and cure you!

I just bought a foam roller and it is helping my sore hamstring. Hurts like a mofo on the side of my leg – is that the IT band area?

I hate being laid up too. Just been fortunate not to be laid up as long and totally as you.
    Hope it gets better soon!

  6. Josie

I’ve been meaning to get a foam roller for my hip.
I can imagine how frustrated you must be not being able to go like you’re used to. What a sweet guy to know exactly what would put a smile on your face!

I literally said “Awwwwwwww” when I saw your first pic. I think your lip was actually quivering. I swear!
I sure hope this whole thing is behind you soon.
I’ve never heard of a foam roller for exercise until you mentioned it. I thought you meant for painting at first. 😀

I kinda/sorta tried the carrot cake oatmeal yesterday. It wasn’t as luscious as yours but I will make it again and with more of the ingredients next time.
Now I have to try the laughing cow on my chicken thing with salsa. Dinner looks great.

Looking at your food is making me think I eat waaaay too much.

I had laughing cow and walnuts on an apple today and I swear it was as good as a caramel apple!

I am really concerned, Lori. If you have any kind of insurance, you need to call your doctor and ask for a ‘prescription’ for physical therapy. Everyone I know that has had this (including me) has been sent to physical therapy and it has really helped. Sometimes doctors just need to be prodded. Also, actually, you should have gotten a referral to a neurologist–that’s who prescribed the p.t. for me. (Actually, he was a neuro SURGEON and I almost freaked out!)

I’m thinking of getting one of those rollers too, for my hip and leg pain. There was an explanantion of how to do some exercises with a roller in the latest Runners World.

I love your face (and havent used the rollers much though people told me I should during my training time for the Princess…).
    and Im with you.
I know I can endure so much if I know theres an end in sight—even if the end is far in the distance.

I don’t use a foam roller but it seems a lot of running bloggers use them. I’m not sold yet.

As for your injury – be patient. Try to do some other kind of exercise that involves movement. Did the Dr. suggest anything? There may be some “chair aerobics” if it is comfortable for you to sit. When I hurt my sciatica years ago, it seemed better if I kept my body in motion most of the time. Small steps. sit for 5 minutes – get up and do some more moving. It hurts and does take time.

Your sad face.. Boo! I hope this dang thing gets better for you! UGH! How is Pixie handling the whole thing?? 🙂

I do have a foam roller & did a post a while back on it… I like it. I am not as regular with it as I should be! :-O

Take care & more happy faces at the coffee places, I hope!

  13. Susan

Awww, cheer up Lori!! Life is long and a few weeks out of commission is just a bump on a very long path 🙂

I have a foam roller and I love it!! Helped me a lot last summer when my calves were cramping up from the biking and swimming. Really good for working the IT band, which can be difficult without it.

Must try the laughing cow and salsa combo…

  14. Leah

I’ve never used a foam roller, no. Might have to Google just to see what’s if for.

Your sad clown face made me sad, but you know…that’s what I love about your blog…you’re real and honest. 🙂

Hang in there. I’m glad you could go for coffee and aren’t bed ridden. It is only temporary, even if it’s a longer-than-you-hoped temporary. 🙂 *hugs*

I hope your back heals quickly & your leg follows suit! It’s so frustrating to be injured, especially when spring has finally come.

  16. MB

Injuries suck! I’ve never used a foam roller but it sounds like a good idea. You can try rolling a towel and using that along with the tennis balls to relieve the pain. I’ve been trying to find that balance between pushing myself and not re-injuring my back – it’s a very fine line. I made it to 45 minutes on the elliptical today … baby steps. I hope you feel better soon. Take care.

  17. Pubsgal

Oh, Lori. I’m sorry that the healing seems to be going so slowly. I am glad that John was able to get that smile back for a little while with some coffee!

Nope, never used a foam roller. I hear they’re great, so I’m thinking of looking for one at Ross; they sometimes have fitness equipment, and the gift card I got for my birthday a couple of months ago is getting too dusty.

Thanks for the birthday greetings to Thing 2!
