Who cooks around here?

Hi to all the new visitors who came over from Caitlin’s blog!  Hope you stick around for a while and feel free to say ‘hi’!  Join me on my snacktacular day, won’t you?

Took an easy day today.  I did wake up early and got right down to making breakfast.  Banana custard oats topped with nuttzo and fluff.

I really like this combo.  The banana was bigger than usual, though, so these were a little on the sweet side.

How about the authorities catching that NYC car bomber?  How fast was that??  They rock!  I can’t believe how little they had to go on and found a suspect so quickly.  If only all suspects were caught so fast.

Anyway, I got down to work fast today.  I like days like today where it goes by quick.  Pit stop for lunch.

Scrambled egg wrap with laughing cow and hot sauce.  I made a real mess with this wrap, too.

Then the snackies started hitting me.  Hello PMS.   I got a piece of toast with nutbutter.

Then a couple of cookies with my latte 🙄

After I finished up work, I took a walk.  Went fairly far today, which was good.  Then I had another snack when I got home before dinner:

Why I put fluff on a date is beyond me.  This was beyond sweet!  If the nut butter had been a salted kind, it probably would have made me have another, though.  That sugar monster sure is a beast sometimes when he gets loose.

I had someone email me and ask who cooked in our household.  Well, the answer is that we both do.  We tend to eat at the same time, but we don’t always eat the same thing.  We each generally fix our own breakfast and lunch, although we sit together and eat most days (unless I am up early and John is still sleeping).  Dinner time can be the same food or not.  As you know, I love my broccoli.  John does not like broccoli.  So, I am always cooking that for myself.  If I make a sweet potato, we generally share it.  One or the other of us will often fix the protein choice, and then we each add our own sides.  John does not eat as many veggies as I do, and he tends to eat more carbs with dinner than I do.  Sometimes one of us will cook the whole meal, like soup or stew or pizza.  We both really enjoy cooking.  We often work in tandem in the kitchen.  Kind of like an old married couple.  Not that we’re an old married couple or anything…

For example tonight, we were eating up leftovers, so we each had our own items.  I used cooked chicken for…..

wait for it….

You knew it was coming.  😀  Yum!  (Celebrating National Salad Month, too) John had pork, strawberries, and Sun Chips (which I snuck some of).

Speaking of Sun Chips – have you tried these with the new compostable bag?  This is the loudest bag ever!  I can’t believe how much noise it makes.  I decided I am going to put this bag to the test and bury it out in a spot in my garden and see what happens.  I’ll take pictures along the way.

Also, I am going to be doing a little interview with John now that he has maintained his weight loss for 6 months or so.  If you have anything you want to ask him, email me or post in the comments.

I am going to be snacking more tonight.  Ugh!  It’s just been one of those days.  We are going out tonight for some coffee and to pick up a few groceries – more fruit for me, yay!  We normally shop just once a week, and then pick up more milk during the week.  I have a feeling I might be nibbling on something with my latte….

Question:  How many times do you shop in a week?

I usually shop once a week or every two weeks depending on how healthy I am eating. I work very close to a farmer’s market, so I can always cross the road to get just about anything I need.

I have a few questions for John. What do you for fitness? I know you ride a bike, but what about lifting? Do you love it like Lori does?

Yup, I’m totally on the snacking wagon today too. I blame it on being more active than usual what with the packing and heavy lifting. I’m going to naively believe the calories balance out there 😛

One of my criteria in my quest for a new man (HA!) is that he likes to cook. It would be so fun to be with someone you like to share the kitchen with!

Good for John on his weight loss maintenance!

It seems I spend so much time at the market but it’s really not that much. I hit Whole Foods once a week and the farm on Fridays for milk, yogurt and eggs. Tuesday is the worst day for my Whole Foods, they never have celery on Tuesdays. Isn’t that odd?

Compostable bag….be interesting to see your updates. Don’t know if we have Sun chips up here. I stay out of the chip aisle at the store. I usually only shop once a week.

I hate those snacky days…you know you are doing it but just can’t stop. You, however did pretty good with your choice of snacks!

It’s nice that John does so much cooking – my husband does most of our grilling, and left to his own devices will either cook up an egg mess (he throws a bunch of stuff into his scrambled eggs) or jarred spaghetti sauce/pasta. Needless to say, I do the “kitchen” cooking most of the time, lol!

That’s great that John has maintained his weight loss – does he attribute it to your interest in losing weight? And does he have to work as hard as you do to maintain? How long was he overweight? What has been the best part of losing the weight? Wow, I guess I had a few questions for him!

Lately, as in the past few MONTHS, I’ve been really unorganized and can’t get with it, so I have been going to the store at least twice a week. *sigh*

Dates and Fluff – that’s a new one for me! I’ve started eating dates lately, too – hard to stop at one…

I so greatly admire anyone who is able to maintaintheir weight-loss…so my question for John is: What would you say is the key to your success in maintaining?

Congrats to John! And to you again, for your recent appearance in Shape magazine – you are definitely a Success Story (they should have put you on the cover)!

I shop 3-4 times a week – with three hungry teenage boys in the house, I can’t keep up with the keeping the pantry stocked! Also I hit a couple of different stores for different things…

Our routine is exactly the same in the kitchen for breakfast and lunch. However for dinner, we eat exactly the same except for the protein. I’m vegetarian Ted is not.

I shop once per week unless I get some great recipe inspiration then I will stop at the store to pick up anything I may not have on hand. That’s unusual because I like to keep fridge and pantry stocked.

I try to shop once a week. Shopping means going into the city, a 40 min drive, to get stuff. Our small town grocery store just kills you in the food prices so it is much more $$ saving to make the trip to the city. So I just go shopping one night each week after my gym workout! 🙂 Plus, since I just came from a healthy, fun workout, I am even more inspired to by the healthy stuff!

I probably go to the store way more than I should for a single person, but I’m always running out of something, and my store is right around the corner…so it’s just too convenient. :-p

The new Sun Chips bag cracks me up! It’s so obnoxious, but I love Sun Chips so I can’t complain. My favorite part? The little label on the bag that tells you why it’s so loud and obnoxious. I guess they needed to justify the noise. 😀

My husband and I generally cook in tandem as well. Except he’s a meat eater and I’m a veggie lover… Your custard oats look really good as do your snacks… if I had those nice little snacks laying around I know I would go hog wild… best not to keep them near me.

Love to come here and see your pictures of the food you eat.

I shop once a week for the groceries on Thursday or Friday and on Saturday I get bread, fruits and vegetables and meat for the week.

I like it how you share your kitchen and cook your own dinner but still do it together. I always cook here because I like it more than R. does which doesn’t mean he likes everything I make but hey … then he should could himself right?

Sometimes I fell like all we ever eat is leftovers. I try to shop only once a week. But sometimes I don’t get enough milk or I have to go to two store b/c of bad/inadequate veg at store #1.
