The broken glass theory.

Hello blogland!  I had a nice night’s sleep last night and woke up hungry! Still no running for me, and I wanted to wait to bike later, so I made up some brekkie.  I was still on a Cream of Wheat thing today, so I made them pumpkin custard oat style.  Topped with 5 toasted pecans and some jam.

This bowl was so filling and huge, and only about 275 calories for the whole thing!  Love it when life works out like that 😀

I was thinking about it being 5 weeks ago today when I did my last run.  I will be honest and say that I really don’t miss running all that much.  I more miss the idea of running.  I miss the calorie burn and the good workout feeling when finishing.  Of course, I miss being able to actually run, because not doing it means something is still wrong.  So – that’s all in the open now LOL!

Fast and furious and work today.  Lunch break:

Lots o’ fiber in this bowl!

Miz Fit made a comment on my post yesterday about showing that I broke a glass.  I thought a little bit about why I actually put that on the blog.  It was more of an attempt to show that my life is far from perfect and that a lot of little things go wrong.  I get asked if I am really as happy as I seem, and I would say that I am.  Annoyingly so, from John’s perspective, I’m sure  .  I read a ton of blogs, or at least they are in my reader.  I know that sometimes when I read blogs, I wonder if that is really how their life is.  Sometimes people come across as so (to me) perfect or incredibly lucky.  Sometimes it looks that way on the surface to me, but I sense there is something lying underneath that isn’t right.  That could always just be me seeing that when it isn’t really there, either, but I am pretty intuitive with people. Other times you can really tell a blogger is very real.

It’s also a reminder that blogs are just a snippet of someone’s life.  Obviously unless there is a webcam, one couldn’t possibly put their whole life on the internet, and who would want to, really?? (Or more importantly, who would want to watch??)  So our opinions of someone’s life are just based on what we are allowed to see.

Anyhoo, I finished up work early.  Clap your hands for productivity!!  It was 56 degrees out, so I decided on a bike ride.  I fueled up with a Kind bar.

These seriously are really good.  I wish I did not know that.  This was also my first real ride with the new bike clips!

I did 19.6 miles today with an average pace of 12 mph.  Feeling good!  I like the clips.  It took some getting used to starting and stopping.  Each time I had to stop I kept saying to myself, “Don’t forget your clips!”  Okay, I actually said it out loud, too….. I was totally paranoid that I was going to forget and just fall over.  The hardest part is reclipping into the pedal after getting going again because it spins around (since I have the dual pedal).  On the longer sections of the path, I just practiced clipping and unclipping while riding to get the hang of it.  I do realize now that I moved my legs around a lot before.  Especially my feet.  Now they stay in place and I am more efficient (I think).  Cool.  I need to adjust them a little, though.

I was hungry when I got back, bottom’s up!

Protein drink and helmet hair – awesome combo 😀

Then some good foam rolling and stretching.  I was also pretty chilled at this point.  56 degrees isn’t really cold, but when you get sweaty in that temp, it’s easy to get chilled.  I decided I needed to incorporate hot sauce into dinner somehow to warm up.

I sliced a cooked chicken piece in half and heated it up, then spread it with laughing cow and the hot sauce.  This was very good!  I wish the laughing cow melted a bit better, but still tasty.

New visitor at the feeder:

Such impudence!

We are off for some coffee tonight, since neither of us had a latte today.  The day wouldn’t be complete without it!

Question:  Do you use a blog reader or do you just bookmark sites?

I use Google Reader! Coffee after dinner makes me awake all night! Do you drink decaf? I like seeing random snippets (such as broken glassware!) of people’s life on their blog, to me, it makes things interesting.

At night I drink decaf. Caffeine actually doesn’t affect me that much that I can tell, but I stay with decaf at night just to be on the safe side.

  2. April

I use google reader. I have so many blogs on there.

I just put a birdfeeder out this morning. It’s so much fun watching them. No squirrels…yet 😉

I just click on the blogs I am following that I have listed on my blog sidebar. That way I know when they’re updated and can read them that way. I tried to use google reader but it just confused me. Awesome bike ride!

I have the blogs I read all the time in my blog roll. Sometimes I read new ones that are posted on their blog rolls.

I know what you mean about “perfect” blogs. From what I read, I consider you to be a genuinely happy person who has her moments. The moments make you and other people who have moments more real to me.

LOL@ the squirrel. I am looking forward to all the chipmunks I see at one of the places my BF and I walk. We were there a couple of weeks ago, but no chipmunks yet. Hopefully when it warms up a bit we will head there again and see some of my cute, little friends.

Is this a comment or a novel? 😉

I just bookmark sites and check back more or less frequently.

And I like what you wrote about broken glass. The whole concept of ‘knowing’ someone just through their written word is pretty interesting.

Very interesting what you said about not missing running. Yes, I think I like the idea of running better than the actual running. Today on my walk with Noah I felt very old, and I flashed forward in blogtime to an imaginary picture of me in 5 years with a cane and a shaky voice saying to all of you, ‘this is it. I can’t keep up with you young’uns anymore.’ LOL I need someone to distract me on my walks!

This “These seriously are really good. I wish I did not know that.” is enough to warn me off of buying those bars – I’ve seen them at my grocery store AND Starbucks and have fondled them, but haven’t purchased. And I shant – well, maybe once I get those 15 off…

What you wrote about bloggers only showing a snippet of their lives is so true – in my case, I don’t write about some things because of who I know reads my blog, and also there are some things that I can’t write about while they may or may not be happening – again, stuff can’t get out before it’s set in concrete. Cryptic enough? LOL

I read my blogs through my blogroll, bookmarks and ones that I follow. Not sure what a reader is or how the RSS feed works – shoot, I’m lucky I can post pictures and do links in my blog!

The chicken with LC and hot sauce looks good!

I use a reader and I have blogs grouped into categories – general news, health and fitness, travel, inspirational and fashion.

I understand about the running. I miss it in exactly the same way. Not enough to start doing it again, but there is nothing quite like the feeling of satisfaction one gets from completing a run – especially when running was such a foreign concept for years.

I really like biking and would love to get serious about it (read: buy a “real” bike instead of a beach cruiser -LOL!). The clip thing scares me though. As does finding a place to bike where I won’t get hit by a car! The streets are so winding around here.

I use Google Reader and I love it. Very easy and organized. However, it does stress me out when I haven’t gotten to reading blogs and my GR is exploding!

Isn’t that funny? If I haven’t looked at my reader in a while and it says 100+ unread I get overwhelmed! That’s so silly, too. Sometimes I close my eyes and hit “mark all as read”.

  9. Yeaaahtoast

I definitely use a reader, Google Reader, because it’s easy. My only complaint is that all the posts are homogenized into one format and I miss all the lovely banners, sidebars, and layouts of everyone’s pages!

  10. michelle

I couldn’t live without my Google Reader! Told you, wish I didn’t know the Kind bars were so good either …

Glad to hear you are enjoying your bike clips! 🙂

  11. cammy@TippyToeDiet

I use Google reader, and it works well for me for the most part.

At our Mother’s Day dinner yesterday, there was a bottle of hot sauce on the table, and my grandmother wondered if people really used it that much. I replied that I knew one person who did! And then I told them about you and your success! And your cat. 🙂

  12. John

I use the RSS feed thing that comes with IE. Just so use to it after 3 years that I haven’t bothered with my google reader. I didn’t think it odd that you put the broken glass on here last night. I like it when crap happens to bloggers as it seems more normal.

I could be wrong but I don’t think I’ve seen a pic of John with his hair cut like mine. I posted a pic of my haircut tonight 🙂

  13. South Beach Steve

Blog reader all the way!! 🙂

I love your statement about this only being a snippet of our lives. I often wonder about other peoples’ full lives. We only tell the story we want to tell on our blogs. Good or bad, it is only what we want to tell.

I so hear you on running! I do it but I am not a huge fan like many.. BUT love the accomplishment when finished & also HIIT and interval results!

So great that you are riding & going far (to me that is far!) & I was going to say how great you look after a hard workout! I look like something the cat dragged in! :-O

    I bookmark & also subscribe… I am a confused woman! 🙂

I think you make an important insight about reading blogs and seeing people as coming across as incredibly lucky or having perfect lives. I have to be so careful of what blogs I read because this is what happens to me, and it is easy to compare myself to others–people I don’t even know! Yes that is so crazy, I know! But it is true. Unless we are very close to people, we can never know what they are going through or what is going on in their lives. I appreciate your honesty.

Glad you are feeling better and getting back to riding. A pace of 12 mph seems like a good pace, but I only ride on an indoor bike so I don’t know how that compares with the outside!

  16. Ari

I definitely use a reader; I’m too forgetful to check all the blogs I read daily. And I can indulge my inner cataloger and categorize them, and mark the posts I find inspiring.

Congrats on the longer ride! And you can never have too much hot sauce in your life. 😉

I’m glad you’ve been getting out on your bike and getting used to the clips. I’m determined to get my bike out this year.

When I first started blogging I never understood how people knew there was a new blog post because I would just keep visiting my favorite sites until I saw something new. I’m glad I finally stumbled onto Google Reader. I love it but sometimes feel overwhelmed when I come back from a weekend away and have hundreds of unread posts. I usually read my favorites (like yours) and skim the rest so I don’t miss out on anything important. I really should trim the fat from my reader someday.

  18. Ang

I just bookmark sites. Though using a blog reader would make more sense because sometimes I forgot a few.

I like your concept of documenting the broken glass. When people are too perfect on their blog it gets annoying.

I definitely use reader. I didn’t start using it until fall of 2007 though! Boy, how my life changed.

I often think the same thing when reading a blog – is that really what they are like? It’s so interesting to MEET bloggers then read their blog. You really feel like you get the inside perspective!
