Read Run 5K recap

My first post injury race!  Woke up at 6:30 to make some brekkie and coffee.  I used to do the 1-minute muffin before races, then I moved to protein oats.  I had those today.  I skip eggs on race day.

This bowl had oats, pumpkin, 1/2 scoop whey protein isolate (plain), 1-1/2 tsp of molasses.  Filling.  This was about 2 hours pre race, so it could settle and pump up my glycogen stores.

I was a little concerned about this race because my back has been aching the last couple days, not sure why, but it isn’t really painful, so I decided to run.  I also knew there was a small hill at the beginning of the race, and I have only done flat since hurting myself.

Not so great weather at first:

We met my sister there!!

And the characters were out.

This run benefits the Literacy Volunteers New York organization.  Some participants dressed up as literary characters, and a lot of spectators did, so that was fun.

The rain stopped and I shed my jacket and just wore my trisuit.  I am so glad because I was chilled to start, but was one sweaty lady by the time I finished.

I started off pretty good and found a nice pace to run.  The first hill was not so bad, although my thigh was saying “what is this?” LOL.  It was a short hill, though and flat until the last down hill.  I always run faster in races than in training, and John and I were saying how part of it is crowd encouragement, a little adrenaline, and the ability to sort of pick off runners as you go through the race.  As I approach someone, I will try to pass them and just go on doing that.

I was surprised that I was passing people towards the end.  I felt quite good, and the aching in my back didn’t get any worse (yay!).  My legs were fine.  I am also always surprised at how many people run really fast, then stop and walk, then run really fast.  You play leap frog with those people the whole race, you know?

I crossed the finish line in 32:40!  That is way faster than I was thinking it was going to be. I was just hoping for under 35.   Last year, I finished in 29:52, so not too far off the pace.  I should be back sub 30 later this summer.   10-1/2 weeks ago I couldn’t even sit up and I am so thankful to be almost back to normal.   Yay!!

John was Mr. Speedy at 26:30.  He is very fast now.

Post race, I had 1/4 of an orange and then we stopped for the best bagels around at Uncommon Grounds!

This place roasts their own coffee, too.  Check out this massive roaster.

Happy race participants.

(John is such a goof 😀 )

Unfortunately, I still have to work today, so while you are reading this (Sunday at any rate), I am hard at work.   😉

Great job on the race! I am happy your back did not bother you. I would LOVE to run a race and see characters like that!

What a great race. Glad the rain stopped and so glad your back didn’t bother you. I like the idea of pumpkin oats–I turn to oatmeal when I feel cold in the morning, mostly in winter. Oh, about the blueberries, I never eat ’em, but I buy the big box at Costco because DH has (lots of) them on his oatmeal every day–we do frozen in the off-season. I’ll trade you my share for strawberries or peaches in season!

Woohoo, glad you had a good race! Your times are wonderful – and what is this thing called “picking off runners” – I have done that exactly once, which landed me in not-last-place, lol! You are a speedy lady! So…has the running bug bit you again?

Oh, and running in cold weather sounds heavenly right about now. 🙂

P.S. My last race I had to run and then go to work – kinda sucked, actually. Sorry you had to work today, too…after running a race I think you should get the day to celebrate!

Great job on the race!! So glad it went well and no additional pain…just make sure you keep stretching afterwards to prevent any additional BP for tomorrow! And WOW – John *is* speedy!

You should definitely do a duathlon….I have a feeling you’d really love it!

Yeah, I agree with Shelley–you should get the whole day to celebrate running such a great race! So good to hear you are doing so well Lori. And Yikes on John’s time. That is amazing!

Congrats on being speedier than you imagined at your 5K! I dream of the day I can do that in 32 minutes…*dreaming*

That’s a cool roaster. My dad roasts his own beans and also makes his coffee a bit different. I’m not sure the name, but he uses a Melitta cone filter holder, boils his water and then pours it over the grounds into the carafe. Anyway, it’s so wonderful and was a great treat to have the two weeks I was out there. I happened to find a mini contraption one a week after I got home and so I’ve been making my coffee the same way – sans fresh roasted beans. Little by little I’m becoming such the coffee snob! LOL I know you appreciate good coffee and can understand.

Okay, enough commenting today. Hope you had a good day at work after that race. Until next post/comment…

    It’s 12:00am now so I hope you’re done working 🙂
Nice race! Got to be great to be doing that again after so long off!

        I know you are…
and I am impressed you carried that camera all the way through the race to get a shot of the finish! Wow!

Lori, how exciting that you did so good after recouping from your injury!!! Big congrats!!!!!!! Wondering how you are feeling today since it is Monday for me. Hope the leg is still doing OK and the back! (I used to get back aches prior to the monthly.. in case that is ready to attack you)

Course I love the food pics too, especially that bagel!!!

I hear you on how races spur you on! I used to run 5K’s but I am competitive when I get in a situation like that & my knees started to take a toll so I decided to forego the races & just run for me. Trying to do a 5K & not push myself is too hard! 🙂

Congrats on a awesome 5K! That must have felt so good for you to be back at it.

I always try not to walk during a race (and not during my runs). I only walk if I’m really exhausted. I’d rather have a slower pace and run the whole way.

Yayyyy!!! SO happy you were able to do this race!! And with a great time too. Hopefully your leg recovered alright from it. No doubt you’ll be running sub-30s by the end of the summer. Holymoly to John’s time. Why are men so speedy?? 😛
