About that protein…

Don’t forget to enter the Lanacane giveaway – ends on Tuesday!

Ah humidity. It was like waking up to a warm wet blanket this morning. Ick. I had half of a balance bar and then drove to the gym because it was raining. I had enough biking in the rain on Saturday 😀

I started off with a jog on the treadmill. There were 5 of us working out and after I hit 1 mile, the power cut out in the gym! We all stopped dead. That was really weird. It stayed off for about 10 seconds and then came back on. I just decided that was enough of a warm up and moved on to the iron.

Exercise Set/rep/weight Muscle worked
Chin ups 2 sets of 2, 3 sets of 1 Upper body
Barbell squats 3 sets of 8 at 75# Lower body
Dumbbell pullover 3 sets of 10 with 25# DB Back
Barbell Good Mornings 3 sets of 10 with 45# bar Lower back and hammies
Rope Crunch 3 sets of 15 Abs
Barbell Chest Press 3 sets of 10 with 55# bar Chest
Reverse Fly on bench 3 sets of 10 with 12# DBs (24# total) Shoulders
Triceps press down 3 sets of 10 at 40# Triceps

The plan was then to run 2 more miles on the hamster wheel, but the legs were not having it.  Not sure what was up with that, so I walked for 20 minutes instead.  I think it was the extra leg work?  Running has become very difficult for me since my injury, but I am not sure if some of that isn’t mental.  I don’t know how to proceed with this.

Anyway, I went home and was ready for brekkie.  I had soaked some steel cut oats overnight and made custard banana oats topped with almond butter and 15 grams of dark chocolate chips:

It’s amazing that those chips are 70 calories.  It is so, so easy to overeat on chocolate.

Work was busier today, thank goodness.  I will either have to take some PTO this week or try to make up 6 extra hours of work at some point this week. Booo….

Lunch time was the leftover Palak Chole from yesterday!  Yum

Check out this humidity.  I had just poured this glass:

It wasn’t all that hot today, but the humidity was horrible.  Just blinking made me sweat 😀  Even poor Pixie was hot:

We finally turned on the AC downstairs and it got much better.

Susan had asked about protein on bagel days.  On any day, I strive for 100 grams of protein.  Most days I hit that pretty easily.  I do drink 15 grams of protein before most workouts in the morning, including the bagel days.  At least on days where we bike to breakfast.  Sometimes I take a Sunday as a rest day and obviously don’t need to eat before breakfast on those days.  I do try to make it up later in the day with heavier protein meals.   I have recently switched to whey protein isolate now, which is basically pure protein and has less calories and more grams of protein per serving.  I get the unflavored kind, so that I can add it to things.  It’s easy to make up your own flavored drink using something like Capella flavors and stevia.  Who needs 5# of cake batter protein powder?  I get bored with flavors pretty fast.

Plus, I can put some of this whey in my latte, and it is like the protein shot at Starbucks.  It is pretty much undetectable at about 5 to 10 grams of powder in a latte made with 8 oz of milk:

Afternoon snacks consisted of some Kashi and some chocolate.

Nibbler is in the house again…. sigh….

I wasn’t feeling like much for dinner.  I had plans to have just some toast for dinner with that yummy bread.  I sliced off a piece, and then noticed all these tiny ants on the loaf!  Ahhhhh!!! There was about 1/3 of the loaf left that we had to toss.

I decided just to have a no-cook dinner:

Good pears this week.

I am going to work for a little bit more tonight and watch some Tour de France preview shows on Versus.  The Tour starts this weekend!  Woo Hoo!

Evening snack is something I haven’t had in a couple of years:

This is the non Splenda version.  Those are harder to find now, unfortunately.

Question:  Which is worse for you, the heat or the humidity?

I’ve never had unflavored protein powder I usually just have vanilla and chocolate on hand but I might have to try the unflavored. Great looking workout. I haven’t done weights in over a week I wonder what it will feel like tomorrow, hmmmm. Good looking food as always. Bummer about the yummy bread 🙁

I hate humidity (which is not a good thing since I live N Carolina). If it’s 50 degrees with high humidity, I sweat and feel gross. If it’s 90 degrees with low humidity I still sweat but it’s not gross.

Humidity. Not good with living in VA, but we’re expecting a few days of deliciously unhumid weather starting tomorrow. Yea. Then we’re leaving for vacay to the west coast–avg high temps in the 50s this week!

Steel cut oats are one of my favourite breakfast staples. However I have never soaked them. Do you think it makes a big difference?

Humidity hands down! I live in usually hot dry west texas but this year has been AWFUL as i’m sure you can tell from reading my blog. Yuck!

I’ll take neither for a $500 Alex. LOL!

I don’t like heat or humidity, but if I had to choose it would be heat.

It was so humid here today too. Felt like I was walking through wet cotton.

    Darn those ants!

I think it is the humidity, but to be honest I am not a fan of either. If I don’t have anything to do or anywhere to go, I am not that bothered by it. But once I get out in it, I get sweaty (an pretty unpresentable) quick.

Humidity! We’ve been suffering mightily the past couple of weeks, but we’re supposed to get a break later this week. It’s hard to be a lumberjack with sweat streaming into your eyes. 🙂

Hmmm, I live with both…but when I go somewhere where it’s just hot, it seems so much easier to tolerate. Of course, we who DO have to live with it use our a/c almost year round, otherwise everything in the house would warp and mildew. Fun!

I”m still deciding on that one. Or, shall I say, I think the humidity is worse, but I like it because it means we get rain and things are green and my hair curls up really easy when it’s more humid. Dry heat is more tolerable though as far as when you come inside you cool off and go on…no stickiness involved.

I like DRY heat, but even that at some levels becomes unbearable.

Humidity is definitely my nemesis….it sucks.

I’ve only seen the nonsplenda versions sparingly… 🙁

We don’t often have humidity, usually when it’s above 86 degrees and that doesn’t happen a lot here (well except for Friday as I’ve been told). So the heat is much more difficult for me.

You know where the Tour starts this year, don’t you? In Holland, Rotterdam to be exact. Way to far for me to go and watch and I don’t like crowds so watch it on TV then.

Lori, like you, I switched to the whey isolate quite a ways back when perimenopause was attacking my ability to keep my weight/size where I wanted it.. like you said, less calories & less carbs as well. I really have to try those capella drops!

I have to say that I like the way you mentioned the chocolate pieces. This is a great example about why measuring out & portion control are so important. People really really do think they are eating less than they are… & this shows how easy it is to do that! Thx for pointing that out!

Love those incline reverse flyes!!! Have you tried using the cable crossover machines to do rear delts… a couple different ways to do them on it.. very cool.

Pixie.. so cute as usual! Me, I hate the humidity.. my hair does too.. except my looks even frizzier than it does without humidity! YIKES!

I should try the cross over. I always tend to rotate the same movements that I forget there are other ones out there….

  14. Lisa

Humidity is the worst!! I’m spoiled living in the Northwest and I’d take heat over humidity any day.

I love the Skinny Cow desserts. They feel decadent but are only 140 calories! Perfect!

HUMIDITY! Ug. You can’t even breathe when it’s humid.

I try not to snack on chocolate chips because such a small portion is SO high in calories! I definitely get in to trouble when I make cookies! lol

  16. Ang

My vote is for humidity being the worst. My hair gets all frizzy and yucky and I hate that sticky feeling you get walking outside. I seriously look like I’m melting!

Oooh, thank you for indulging me and answering my question!! I do unflavoured protein powder now too. Mostly soy though, as I typically make protein bars with it. I don’t know why, but I’ve never been into shakes. I think it’s because I hate cleaning the blender so much 😛

Gaaahhh, the humidity in Ontario is awful. It makes running so much harder!
