Lifting and the 4 noble truths

Glad you all liked our 100-mile recap!  I worry sometimes about my posts being too long.  I have a certain threshold of length when I read that I try to not cross when I write (does that make sense?).  I think that is why my writing comes across as truncated sometimes.

Anyhoo, I decided to lift today, but not do a whole lot of cardio.  My legs felt good, but still wanted one more day off from running and I didn’t necessarily want to bike a long distance today (wonder why??).

I did bike to the gym, though. It’s only 2 miles, so no biggie 😀

Exercise Set/rep/weight Muscle worked
Stiff-legged deadlifts 3 sets of 10 with 80# bar Lower body
Close grip lat pulldown 3 sets of 10 at 50# Back
Dumbbell Chest Press 3 sets of 10 with 20# DBs (40# total) Chest
Barbell split squats 3 sets of 8 (each leg) with 55# bar Lower body
Captain’s Chair 3 sets of 10 Abs
YTWL 3 sets with 10# DBs (30# total) 4 reps of each letter Shoulders
Kickbacks 3 sets of 10 with 15# DBs (30# total) Triceps
Lower back extension 3 sets of 10 at 100# Lower back

Then I walked for a bit on the treadmill and headed home. My bike computer seems to be on the fritz for some reason. Maybe doing the 100-mile ride burned it out LOL!

I was ready for food when I got home. Why I can still eat a hot breakfast in hot weather is beyond me, but there you go. I have been craving pumpkin lately, too, so I dipped back into my stash to make some pumpkin cream of wheat.

Topped with almonds and crystalized ginger. Yum!

I had the Tour de France on this morning while working. It was live, too. I cannot believe how many crashes there have been so far in only 3 days! It’s scary. An exciting tour so far. While I am rooting for Lance Armstrong for the sake of Lance, I really am rooting for Andy Shleck. He showed true heart today to totally crash and be injured, and then keep going through all of that pain.  That is some real fortitude.

Lunch break and I was back into the blueberries!

Along side some scrambled eggs topped with laughing cow and some pasta salad leftover from the picnic yesterday.

Work has been surprisingly busy yesterday and today, so the days have gone quick. I was really trying hard to pay attention to hunger signals today. I was sort of hungry around the usual latte time, but I was trying to figure out if that was schedule hunger or real hunger. I waited half an hour and decided it was hunger. I made myself a cold latte today (my barista was out). I had measured out my milk and poured the espresso over it. It looked so cool!

I would have thought milk would float on top since it has some fat in it, but I guess not!

Pixie came down and laid on the floor as soon as she heard me turn on the AC.  She can sometimes seem like a very smart kitty. 😀

We are at the start of that heat wave here. Phew!

John had gone grocery shopping and picked up the breaded clam strips I like so much. He offered to cook them on the grill since he was doing a burger. They got a little crispy… as did my broccoli.

The only thing that wasn’t burned was my kiwi.  🙄  Gotta love it.

I am finding the “Savor” book to be quite interesting.   It is applying the 4 noble truths of Buddhism and relating those to being overweight or unhealthy.

Truth 1 – All of us have suffering in our lives (being overweight)

Truth 2 – We can identify the cause of our suffering (poor diet, lack of exercise, etc)

Truth 3 – Realizing we can put an end to our suffering (obesity is not a life sentence)

Truth 4 – There are ways to end our suffering (Mindful eating)

Kind of neat analogy, don’t you think?

I did snack on some cashews while dinner was cooking because I was hungry, but I really should have waited 10 minutes until the food was ready.  That is a habit I really need to break.  I am going to try very hard to pay attention to hunger signals tonight.  If I am hungry later than I normally eat, I will have something.  The heat might make my appetite funny the next few days, but we will see.

Question:  Tour de France follower?

More of a Lance follower.. I think its just amazing the way he was able to recover and come back…. And i can’t help but like how he snubbed it in the noses of the team that dropped him when he had cancer.

Have you ever read his exwifes’ blog? She’s a runner. Kristin Armstrong. If not check her out she writes pretty good.

  2. Kimberley

Tour de who? Cable free zone here…but I may consider heading out see some World Cup action tomorrow afternoon at break time.

    Go Netherlands!!!

Love the look of your layered drink.

I love the full-body workout! I try to do at least one full-body session per week to keep from getting too sore in one body part.
Savor sounds like an amazing book (and has some awesome reviews on Amazon). I think it’ll be my next Barnes and Noble read.
I haven’t ever really followed Tour de France because, frankly, I get tired of hearing about Lance Armstrong. He’s definitely a tough guy and has been through a lot, but it becomes so redundant.

  4. Fitcetera

All those crashes at the end on Sunday were unbelievable! I forgot to watch it today though. Hopefully tomorrow morning I’ll remember.

    Have a great Tuesday!

Thanks for the book tip – that sounds like a very interesting book! We also like the Schleck brothers, from nearby Luxembourg, but are really rooting for our Belgians!

I think sometimes the cause is deeper!
I think sometimes these things are symptoms of a larger issue….
Something unseen – a though, perhaps – that manifests itself here or there.

    But yeah!
    Very cool analogy!
And this on the Dali Lama’s Birthday!

I don’t really follow the tour, but my husband does so I soak some of it in by osmosis. And it doesn’t matter how hot it gets, I always want a hot breakfast, always.

I sometimes see something of the Tour but ain’t a follower. I do admire Armstrong because he came back so strong after his fight against cancer.
My mom is a big Tour fan however so when I was a kid I had to watch it every day 😆

I don’t mind a long post Lori, not from you, I love reading your blog and you make it fun with all your pictures so never a dull moment with you.

No way! I have never felt like your posts are too long. You write so engagingly, and I love the photos! I also like your questions, too. Speaking of…No, not following Tour de France. I did catch a little of the Tour of California, since it was in our area and my daughter and her class got to see it pass in person! I found the write-up my daughter did while going through the school things: She drew a picture of a guy on a bike and a police car, and wrote, “It was damp and fast and super!” 🙂

Your lunch and dinner in this post look SO delicious! I love your food pictures! And your Pixie picture, of course. She is quite the cutie pie!
