Silks And Satin 5K recap and to market

We were up early for the race today.  This race benefits the Special Olympics New York and is one of the bigger races we do.  It was also my very first 5K 2 years ago, so it is a little sentimental.

Had pre run fuel of banana oats topped with cashew butter and jam.  Plus coffee.

Then we hit the road – too early!

Pre race face:

Lots of people milling around at the registration line.

There were 700 preregistrants (including me) and a huge line for race day registrants (including John). I would estimate around 1000 people or so.

The race corrals stop at a 10 minute mile, so we line up in the 8-9 minute mile because people always start further up that really should be farther back.  This race was no exception.  It took about 45 seconds to cross the start line, which gets added to your time unfortunately.  There was a large clog at the beginning and when they called out time at 1 mile they said 11:50. I was surprised at that time because I know that I was running a much faster pace than that.  I felt pretty good, although it was really, really humid out.  Yesterday was cool, but today is upper 80s and humid, as in swimmingly so.

I was passing quite a few people, as expected.  It wastes a lot of energy to weave around people. Maybe I should start farther up, even though I am no where near a 7 minute mile.  Right before mile 2, there was a sound system going and it was playing the theme to Rocky.  How awesome!  I got a big smile and matched the pace.  It gave me a good boost of energy.

Mile 2 and time called out was 22:15.  Much faster pace, so I knew there was some fudge up with where they start the clock.  Right then, a bunch of people passed me.  I think when they hit the 2-mile mark, they pushed it, but then I passed them again a little later.

During mile 3, I had my pace music on the 6.5 mph pace for 5 minutes.  I was drenched in sweat at this time and kind of wanting the race over at this point.  1/2 mile from the finish and I got a bit of a stitch in my side, but I just pressed on and crossed the line at a about 32:50.  So, I don’t know what to think about that time, but it doesn’t really matter.  What matters is that I finished! Woo Hoo!

It’s also opening day for the Saratoga Race Track, and we were parked by the warm up track.  See how foggy humid it is?  This is post race and about 8:45 a.m.  or so.

Horses are such beautiful creatures.

I didn’t have any post race snack, as we wanted an awesome bagel in Saratoga, but we did grab our swag bags and then went to the farmers market first.

Post race face.  Little more awake here! I did mop off my face before taking this.  Even my forearms and shoulders were sweating, so you know it was humid.

Such lovely produce.

We got some of these tiny plums.  They look like cherries, don’t they?

They are very sweet and delicious!

I also picked up some hot peppers and patty pan squash.

Then it was time for Uncommon Grounds!  I had a cinnamon raisin bagel with honey nut cream cheese.

View from Mount Bagel.

Yum.  Best bagels around.

Can you believe all of this done by 10 am ??

Here was the swag bag from the race:

Plus a t-shirt.  I am going to keep a few of the cookies and ship the rest off with John at his poker night, as the guys will eat those.

The drink is a cranberry/pomegranate one, but sweetened with Splenda.  Booo….  John will get both bottles (we got identical bags!)

Trest of the day was spent mowing the lawn (too hot, good thing it is small), some weeding (too hot), porch sitting (too hot),

snacking because I didn’t want a sit down meal:

Plums!

I ate each time I got hungry.

Watched the tour.  39 seconds Contador won by…..hmmmm…. that’s all I’m sayin’.

Afternoon hunger assuaging.

We are headed out for dinner now.  I want an omelet and we don’t have any eggs in the house!  Need that breakfast for dinner.  Have a super evening!

Great race and great cause! The farmers’ market looks spectacular. Oh my goodness, I would come home with bushels of flowers each day, not to mention the produce.

That post-race bagel does look awesome.

    Enjoy your omelet!

Great recap–you look awesome before and after your race. I love Special Olympics–thanks for your support of them. My favorite food picture was the bread (and butter?) and jam–I could wolf down a couple of those right now! Hope you had a great omelette dinner.

Great job on the race! Thanks for encouraging me today on my post. Keepin’ on is how you’re now running a 5K in under 33 minutes, right? I will follow your advice and someday share that kind of race time. 🙂

What a great race – congratulations! Weaving around people takes up so much extra energy – one of my least fun things about racing. You had a great pace, and how fun that this was an “anniversary” race!

Awesome race recap. That’s a lot of stuff in that swag bag. At the 5k I ran, they gave away a lot of prizes, including ice cream and pizzas. It made me laugh how everyone there was so healthy and just ran a race and then they were giving a way junk food. :)But I guess everyone eats food like that once in a while, I guess I always thought healthy people only ate lettuce. 😉

Congrats Lori!!! What a great cause too! Man, I wish I looked as good as you after I finished running! 🙂 I love the pics too! My hubby loves horse racing so must show him those pics!!!

I will take the bagel & homemade bread please! 🙂

Great time on your race Lori, congrats!
I’ve got that Rocky theme on my Ipod which I always play on shuffle. But every time this song comes up it makes me go faster too 😆

I’ve watched the tour yesterday and it was exciting to see that Schleck was faster at the first miles. That would have been something if he could have maintained that. Next year better for him. Tomorrow night there’s a race in Holland, place is called Boxmeer where all the big Tour bikers will be. Will see tomorrow night who showed up. It’s too far for me to go watching.

I love the plums. Bought some myself yesterday too.

Fran sent me over here as she realized she was reading race reports about the same race. I also ran the Silks and Satins race yesterday. Man it was hot! I wish I had known about the bagel place. I would have loved to have gone there. I went to Target after and did a department store shop as we have no Target! Nice job on the race on such a hot day!

  9. Jon (was) in Michigan

I was at the race too and it was incredibly hot and humid. Just the worst of conditions for racing. Finishing at all on a day like that is a bonus. And the food they hand out is superb. I’ve already finished my Freihofer cookies (oink!).

Those look like some awesome race goodies you were given!!! Way to go on the 5k! 🙂

You asked about whether I worry about “peaking too early for an event.” (I didn’t know if you’d look back to my blog for my responce?) So, anyhow, since my main goal is just to FINISH this first half iron, I’m really not worried. My training is not as intense as some of my friends that are really trying to improve their times from prior races like this one. Like I said, I think I could already finish it if it were next week. So, for the last few weeks of training (before my taper) I will work a bit on my speed, while keeping up the long distances. Maybe I can meet my secondary goal of finishing under 7 hours. 🙂

You’re right. I don’t believe that is your husband next to me. Seriously I do believe it but that is pretty amazing! I hope he had a good race too! Was he as hot and wiped as I was?

  12. Darlene

Loved reading your recap. You reminded me of the Rocky theme music halfway.
I was there. I was the one who who met fellow blogger AJH. When’s your next race?

  13. Pubsgal

Congrats on a great race! How fun that you both get to run together! And that swag bag is truly amazing. Most races only give out a t-shirt here, although I’ve gotten some interesting items, like a trial size antiperspirant that smelled just like watermelon Jolly Ranchers!

  14. John

Congrats on the race! And no mention of your previous injury so you must be feeling good about the running then?!

  15. Susan

I’m late – but I think you did an awesome job on the 5k Lori!! To be honest, I haven’t even been running since I came to Toronto because it is so friggin’ hot/muggy/humid/smoggy. I haven’t even had the guts to sign up for a race, let alone do one!! I think you’re off a great start this season after the injury 🙂

Oh, and the Tour. Sigh. Contador IS the better overall rider. By a hair this year. I’m not sure if he’ll snag it again next year though! Andy is still pretty young and has may good years of racing left in him.
