Comments at the gym

Wednesday workout time! I had a quick protein drink and headed out to the gym.

Treadmill warm up, then the iron:

Exercise Set/rep/weight Muscle worked
Barbell Split Squat 3 set of 10 at 65# Lower body
Straight Arm Lat Pulldown 3 sets of 10 at 50# Back
Barbell Chest Press 1 sets of 10 at 60#

2 sets of 8 at 60#

Chest
Planks 3 sets of 75-second holds (dying) Core
Seated Calf Raise 3 sets of 10 at 140# Calves
Nose Breakers 3 set of 10 at 30# Triceps
Face Pull 3 sets of 12 at 30# Shoulders
Good Mornings 3 sets of 10 at 55# Low Back and hammies

I then walked on the treadmill for another 15 minutes and called it a day. My thighs are tight and a little sore. Think it was 5 miles with the speed work in there from yesterday.

Guess today is Waffle Wednesday because that is what I had for breakfast 😀

Not sure why this picture looks small, but it was my usual batch of waffles.  Yum. With some good Sumatra coffee that I roasted up. I got some new green coffee and it is quite good.

Back to the gym for a moment or two.  The comment I got wasn’t regarding taking up a machine.  When I did my run, there were 4 empty treadmills next to me, so I wasn’t worried about someone wanting the equipment. My gym doesn’t have set time limits on cardio equipment. It is a very small gym and there is an unspoken rule of 30 minutes of use if people are waiting. If no one is waiting, then you just have at it. Very rare to have anyone waiting for cardio equipment except sometimes Saturday mornings.

I will say hi and bye to people or I might say “good workout” or something like that. I don’t mind when people make comments like that to me. What bothers me is when people say things like I am actually doing something weird. Comments like “Another crazy cardio workout?” or “I could never run that long, it’s so bad for your knees”. I have gotten comments that I don’t need to do cardio. I have been told that I should use the elliptical and not the treadmill.  I overhead 2 women saying I looked like a monkey when I was doing my chin ups.  My favorite one is the ‘personal trainer’ at the gym who will come up as I am finishing a set while strength training and say “give me 5 more, come on!” Funny at first, but he really means it and expects you to do it. Then he will proceed to say “now try this move”. At least he does that to others as well and not just me.

It’s one thing for me to put my workouts and videos up here, because I expect comments, suggestions, critiques, etc.  Just not when I am by myself.

Sometimes I think I am just hypersensitive about the comments (probably correct to a degree).  Maybe that is just some people’s way of being friendly? I don’t know if the person who told me I don’t need cardio tells that to other people or not. I do need cardio. You can’t just go out and run or bike miles with only strength training. This person doesn’t know what I do outside the gym. Or frankly neither does anyone else. Hence why I wouldn’t offer advice unless asked (even though I do want to sometimes 😉 )  I just want to do my workout not noticed or bothered, really, which doesn’t seem too much to ask.

Anyhoo – that’s enough of that!  Ready for a lunch break?  I just could not arrange this plate at all and have it look right.  This is some homemade parnsip/squash soup (recipe coming Thursday) with a tuna pita.

Note 2 clems, I had the 3rd later 😀

I was a busy bee with work today.  I am leaving tomorrow to go to King of Prussia, PA for a dog show with my mom and sister.  Colleen is showing Storm (who you have seen me with on the blog) and we are going with for a girl’s weekend.  Only it is at the end of the week and not the weekend LOL.

So that means working hard to finish up so I can do laundry and pack stuff and tidy up loose ends around here.  I told John he needed to remember to be Crack Master for Pixie in the mornings, aka dispenser of the wet food (like she would let him forget that).

I own this place, any questions?

<insert latte drinking here>

Dinner time!  This plate was pretty full.  Chopping things into pieces really takes up a lot of room.  3.5 ounces of chicken and 4 large brussel sprouts and they take up 2/3 of the plate!

Delicious, though.  And the anjou pear was perfectly ripe!  Love it when that happens.

Done with work and need to get packing, practice guitar, catch up on blogs, and all that.  Snack will be this x2 😀

The last of the Christmas cookies!

Question:  What is your favorite waffle/pancake topping?

My favorite toppings? Well i love blueberry sauce just like you make, sugar free maple syrup, i love warmed peanut butter, on banana waffles/pancakes i love the syrup with some walnut pieces on them.
Oh and apple/cranberry sauce is always good 🙂

    Pixie is definitely the Queen!

I don’t eat pancakes or the like, but at Christmas my daughter wanted the Belgian Waffle Bar I used to do. So on Christmas Day, I had a Belgian Waffle topped with Nutella and whipped cream. OMgoodness was it yummy.

For waffles (haven’t made in forever – need to do that soon!), I like peanut butter and sugar-free maple syrup. I don’t usually have that combo on my pancakes, not sure why. Oh, and if it’s pumpkin pancakes, I like cream cheese and sugar-free maple syrup. 🙂

Huh. I wonder if being in a more urban area, people don’t seem to talk to other people at the gym as much. I’m guessing that the comments are probably people projecting their personal preferences/philosophy on other gym-goers, and you’re probably not the only one they do it to. The “do the elliptical instead” person might not be a fan of running or might have bad knees. The “you don’t need cardio” person might be in the “strength is better than cardio” camp (or maybe doesn’t like running, either). It kind of boggles me that they would give advice without knowing your fitness goals. Sure, if fat loss was my *only* goal, I’d probably focus more on strength training, but that’s not going to help me with running races and triathlons.

Hope you enjoy a nice weekend with your mom & sister, and good luck to Storm at the dog show! (Also hope Pixie doesn’t give you the cold shoulder for very long after you get back. “You spent the weekend…with a DOG? Ugh, the nerve!” Is that picture so cat, or what?)

    P.S. Bye, nutmeg logs!

(Clarification, last sentence 2nd paragraph: “that” being “omitting cardio.” I think the strength stuff I did during the summer – with Pilates and my strength class – greatly improved my running form, and my end-of-summer tri felt a lot easier than others I’d done.)

It’s probably just their way of reaching out and being friendly but I agree with you…I get so annoyed when people comment “Running is so bad for you.” Um thanks, I know that there is risk in running but guess what? I chose to do it anyways.

When I was training for Hood to Coast I got tons of snide remarks and comments from naysayers. It always made me mad because I wanted support and encouragement not negative comments.

Thankfully people seem to leave me alone at the gym. Every now and then I see someone that I want to say something to, but I try to leave them alone. Only once did I speek up – when I saw a woman that couldn’t figure out how to use the pull-up machine. (It’s one where the MORE weight you put on, the EASIER it is to do a pull-up.) I felt bad for her, and she seemed happy that I gave her the advice to ADD weights. 🙂

Someone said you looked like a monkey?? OMG how rude is that! I’m so sorry. I hear too much that “I’m going to get bulky by the way I workout” and that I need to do cardio too- but for my goals and my body, neither one is true and I also hate getting comments like that!

Re: comment left on my blog. A cupcake ride would make just about any ride worth it. I am going to HAVE to work that in somehow. 🙂

I think it would bother me if I got those kinds of comments too. Not trying to be anti-social or anything but I tend to like my personal space at the gym. Just trying to work out, people.

I need a new waffle iron so I can make up some of your protein waffles. My waffle iron overflows every single time. Solution: pancakes!!

Enjoy your trip. Can’t wait to see some pictures.

…sigh… Inappropriate people – be it at a gym or other public places – never cease to amaze me. But that “personal trainer” dude needs to knock it off. He doesn’t know you, doesn’t know what your goals are or what you’re capable of. How does he know you wouldn’t get hurt doing 5 more? Sorry, but that just p’s me off. People who make the most noise or make the dumbest comments are usually the most insecure. Having said that….have fun in my state! Will you get to hit the mall at all? Safe travels, my friend!

If I was to hear that many comments I’d eventually have to tell them what’s up(you know that you bike, run, etc…not that it’s their business!) or it’d drive me nuts. Set them in their place….nicely?! 🙂

Oh my goodness, people can be rude! So far, my personal interactions at the gym have been positive, but maybe that’s because the music is so loud I can’t hear what people are saying. Plus, I am a wimp and can’t do pull-ups. 🙂

Enjoy your weekend away! Put those ugly gym folks right out of your mind!

This is one of the reasons I don’t go to a gym….. I take offense easily, because of my past history and childhood… that’s another story.

Holy cow! They sure make a lot of comments in your gym. I have never experienced something like that in the gyms where I belong. We also don’t have a 30 minute rule for the cardio machines, not even when it’s busy.
I can totally understand you’ll get irritated by this, I would too.
People should mind their own business, like you said: they don’t see what other things you do.

It’s the same with eating: when people know you are trying to lose weight and you eat one ‘bad’ thing you’ll get a comment. They don’t know that you’ve been eating healthy all week so that you could eat that particular treat.

I always say: get a life and don’t pay so much attention to other people.

  14. Fran

Holy cow: what are these people thinking! Get a life and don’t pay so much attention to someone else.

I would be very irritated too!

  15. Susan @ Home Workouts

Hey Lori, you may find that doing a more dynamic warm up, that is less treadmill walking and more movements specific to the exercises you will be performing that workout, will actually lead to enhanced performance during your workout. Try doing bodyweight squats, some knee push ups, over/unders, planks, and side planks. These will not only get more blood flow to those muscles but neurologically you will be already firing those neurons that will be working during your lifting. 86 the treadmill for a warm up for one week and you will thank me.

You know, it always amazes me that some people have the gall to make comments like that. Rude, rude, rude!!!! Some people need to shut the heck up and mind their own business!!!! You are totally on track and doing what is best for you!!
    Have a great day!

I love John’s designation as kitty Crack Master. That is too funny! But the people at the gym. Sigh. I don’t know why they do that. Unsolicited advice is annoying when you’re in the groove, getting your planned workout done. And those who just openly critique your workout, well, you are a better person to be able not to grumble back at them.

I have the issue most deathly pale celtic ancestry people have when they workout…crazy red face. This makes me look like I’m having a stroke when I’m actually doing great. I hate when people tell me to slow down, take a break, get some water, and so on. I even have had the spinning instructor stop class to see if I’m ok. I try telling these people ahead of time that reddish/purple glow is normal for me! lol Guess I should be glad they care.

I am back Lori.. honestly in all my years, I have never had comments like you get. First, lots of people should do cardio & have to to supplement their weight loss efforts.. I know some say no but I have alway had to do it unless I wanted to eat 1200 calories a day or less… NOT! Also, some people just like to run.. my god! WTF with these people & their comments. If they knew you when you were heavy, maybe they are jealous or trying the sabotage thing.. I don’t get it. I have also been running since my late 20’s so………..

People tell me they admire me for my committment…. Lori, you are awesome!

Sometimes people just don’t think. I don’t think they always mean it like it sounds, but it would be nice if they slowed down and thought about what they were saying sometimes.

  21. Leah

I like my pancakes and waffles with peanut butter and syrup. I don’t have that too often any more, but it’s delicious to me. Some day I’ll branch out and try more colorful toppings. 🙂

When you said “..doesn’t know what I do outside the gym.” I was reminded to be careful about comments I would make about anything in life, because you never know where the person is coming from. I can’t get over the personal trainer guy….crazy that he thinks he’s that good to direct others. *shaking head*

You’re probably on your girls weekend already. Hope you’re enjoying yourself!

Whoaaaa, I’ve never seen or experienced anything like that at a gym before! Even in a small town gym. It is NOT okay to comment on the workouts of others unless they’re in danger of hurting themselves. I know people who’ve trained for whole marathons on treadmills. So what if you’re on one for an hour? And it’s my pet peeve when personal trainers approach people and start harassing them. I never approach people on the floor unless I already know them. Clearly, I’ve got some strong opinions on gym etiquette.

Wow, I am amazed and inspired!!!! One question, how were you able to loose weight on your thighs? I run for example but I am not sure whether this will actually make my thighs bigger/ smaller@

    Keep up the spirit!

    1. Lori Post author

Thank you! I wouldn’t worry so much about whether running will make your thighs bigger or smaller. I actually squat pretty heavy and do a lot of biking and it made my thighs smaller. My lower half is the part that loses last, and gains first LOL! You can’t really tell where your body will take the weight from, but just know that by running you are doing so much for your body!
