Snow’s a comin’!

First of all, thank you for the kind thoughts on my job loss.  I think some of those nasty blogs/talk shows out there spewing the hate need to come here and see what the real blogging community is all about. Seriously.

I am fine.  For those who are newer to my blog, I work 2 part-time jobs as a transcriptionist.  The first job I was at full time last year and it became a very stressful place to work, so I took another job and reduced my hours at the first company.  So, I was not really enamored of working for them anyway, but I wasn’t feeling motivated for change.  Guess they motivated me LOL! So, I will talk with my other job and see what they can do for me.  I have to replace that income.  I suppose I can always work at Dunkin Donuts up the street if need be 😉  The only choice is to be positive about it.

I was trying to decided whether to run or bike today.  The bike trainer was calling to me from the bedroom next door to avoid the cold, but I knew a lot of snow is going to come in overnight tonight, which might preclude me from going to the gym on Wednesday, so off I went.

Ready for action!  That sign is just a friendly reminder to bring a separate pair of sneakers to use the equipment during snowy weather.

I ran for 3 miles today.  I worked my pace up for the first 3/4 of a mile and settled in at 5.7 mph (10:31 mile) and ran the rest.  I decided to push just a wee bit with the pace since I was doing 3 miles instead of 4 or 5.   I also experimented with fasting cardio today, so that is the reason I just did 3 miles.  I was fine, although pretty hungry when I got home.  I commenced to making some pumpkin oats!

  • 40 g oats
  • 1 cup of water
  • pumpkin pie spice (lots)
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin
  • 1/4 cup egg whites
  • topped with 1/2 ounce crystallized ginger
  • 7 grams toasted walnuts
  • 1 tablespoon creamed honey

Does this not look heavenly?  It was.  Total calories for this bowl 380.  I loves me a big breakfast!

Since I am back in weight loss mode, I am dropping down my exercise some.  I know some people ramp theirs up, but I don’t work very well that way.  I need to eat when I exercise a lot.  I don’t do Biggest Loser style.  I do find that the weight comes off more easily when I get in a little less exercise, like running 3 miles instead of 5.  Kinda funny, but that is how it works for me.

I settled in to work job #2, although I guess this is now the only job.  Will have to see what kind of work comes in over the course of the week to see if it is sustainable to do alone.

Lunch break came and I had a slice of homemade bread with tuna salad.  I was going to have some carrot sticks, but how appealing were these?

Not very.  So I left them out 😀

Took a work break for the standard protein latte with a truffle.

I have had this bag since Christmas and still working on it.  This bag was not involved in the chocolate fest that was last weekend…

It’s that time of year when tax stuff starts rolling in.  We have all of our receipts for 2010 in a box.  You can tell what Pixie thinks of tax season:

What’s an audit?

While I thought about dinner, I snacked on some of my Trader Joe’s haul of Thai chili lime cashews:

Dang these are good.  But they are cashews, so what else would I expect them to be?

I was in the mood for both BBQ and a stirfry for dinner, so I decided to combine the 2!  I used some of the brown rice from the other day.  Pan fried it with broccoli, a little cooked pork, caramelized onions and BBQ sauce.

Quite good, I have to say.

John and I are going out for some coffee tonight and chit chat.  Lots to chit chat about, too.

We are gearing up for some more snow tonight.  As if 10 inches wasn’t enough over the weekend, they are predicting another 4 to 9 tonight.  That will likely interfere with both bagel day and and going to the gym… double boo… but there is the bike trainer and the shovel

I didn’t know you wanted to lose weight… I thought you were in maintenance mode…

I’m the same way, I have a voracious hunger when I exercise! Which would explain why I’m no longer losing weight.

I love crystallized ginger! I’ve been eating them post workout because they taste good and I’m always craving something sweet afterwards- but I also heard ginger is good for inflammation. Sweet!

Count me among the many who are bummed to hear that job #1 laid off all the part-time people, yet who think you’ve got a better opportunity on the horizon. I have a feeling that you’d be GREAT at whatever you decide to do. Regarding the layoff, though, sheesh. Often managers are given a kind of “script” to use when they have to lay off people; but that seems pretty lame, to not have a least thanked you for your contribution, especially since they asked if you’d consider being on their back-up list.

And you’re a good one for that run. I had some serious skirt envy at hula class last night, so I blew off the gym to go to Goodwill and find a skirt. So I’ll need to do something tonight at home after the younglings go to bed. (Which kind of sucks, but I do like the stationary bike better than the treadmill.)

And you scored some serious goodness at Trader Joe’s! I’ll have to look for that peanut flour stuff, it sounds great!!!

It’s so hard to believe things are going to be OK when you’re shocked & stressed but they will be, I just know it.

Your stirfry sounds & looks yummy!

We’re under a blizzard warning with predictions of 18-24 inches. The county where I live is forecast to get the higher amounts – we NEVER get snow like this – blech!

Snow day! I’m hoping for one tomorrow (but I’m sure I’ll have to go in no matter what). Glad you had the second job at hand — hope they can give you some more hours. Fingers crossed the snow doesn’t interfere with bagel day. 🙂

Sorry to hear about your job Lori! That just stinks but it sounds like you have a great attitude. Good luck with all the snow. I for one am ready for Spring!!!

I agree with you – our slice of blogland is full of sweet, supportive people. 🙂

Your stir fry looks good. I’ve got brown rice on my grocery list and am looking forward to not only trying your method of cooking it, but now doing a stir fry as well! Thanks for the great dinner ideas!

I am the same way when it comes to being in losing mode (which I am at the moment) – I have to be careful not to workout too hard or I get ravenous and end up sabotaging all my efforts. Glad to know I’m not the only one!

Your oatmeal looks to.die.for. If I hadn’t JUST eaten I would make it now. It’s funny that you mention your body responds better to decreasing exercise for weight loss because I recently discovered that mine does the same.

And snow definitely can put a damper on workoutplans BUT the important thing is that you find a way to work around it – which you have! 🙂 Keep up the awesome work.

HOMEMADE BREAD!!!!!!!!!! Course I would get that out of everything else you wrote! 😉

My Pixie friend has a job that takes her back east for 2 weeks at a time every other 2 weeks so she is there now & getting it! Good thing you have the bike trainer at home!

    Stay warm!

    The cashews sound yummy! 🙂

I always say I love the winter until the ice and snow hit and then I’m not so sure anymore…well, I am if I can stay home and enjoy warm drinks all day. LOL 😛

Just discovered your blog from Girl Hero! What a treasure. 🙂

I recently stumbled upon a Rosemary Chashew recipe that sounded really yummy. I need to open my nut variety wider (that sounds funny). I typically stick to almonds. My youngest has an allergy, so I tend to stay away from them.

Hey, I have carrots that look like that! 🙂

It’s tough sometimes to find that balance between exercise and eating. If I’m doing lots of Big Deal workouts, I need big deal calories to go with it. That works great in maintenance, not so well in loss mode. 🙂

Love the shot of Pixie! She looks serious about those taxes. 🙂

We’re in the midst of a blizzard here too. Fun! Made it to work though. Wish work had snow days!

I feel you on the exercise/hunger thing. I just started P90X and it makes me so hungry! So far I’ve done good about not overeating.

If exercise less is helping you lose weight: do it. Everybody is different.

The dinner looks delicious! Hope you and John had a pleasant evening together.

I just started reading your blog. I also do workouts where I use don’t eat before cardio. I have heard it called “bonk training”. It seems to work well for me. I hope if you continue with the fasting cardio you keep posting about it. It sounds like you have adjusted your exercise to fit your life and your schedule. I am also trying to find something that works for me. I welcome any input. Thanks for sharing, I will continue to follow. 🙂
