Bagel love

Bagel Wednesday Thursday!  Roads are all clear.  They actually do quite a good job around here keeping the roads clear.  First, I rode the trainer a little bit.

I tried reading for the first time while on it.  That was a little weird at first, but the time sure went by fast!

This is the Taube’s book, btw.  I am finding it both informative and irritating.

We headed out to Adirondack cafe for bagels.  My wheat bagel.

John’s coffeecake in the background.  We talked about Taube’s book and low carb stuff.  All while eating coffeecake and bagels.  Irony – it tastes delicious!

Slow work day in the morning.  I am really going to have to look for something else.  Not that I am not doing that already, but must expand horizons a bit.

Lunch time was more of the chicken chili.

I think it mellowed overnight, but I don’t think John agreed with that…

I have been thinking about paleo or lower carb to try as an experiment (although they sort of are hand in hand).  I normally subscribe to a moderate carb diet.  In looking at my nutrient numbers, I would have to leave some things out that I am not sure I want to (grains, bagels, dairy, fruit).  I may try a couple of days with no grains, but leave in milk and fruit and see where my carb numbers come in.  It will really take a lot of work and planning, more than I usually do.

What I might do is to carb cycle, where I do a couple lower carb days and then a higher carb day (bagel days).   That would likely be easier for me – kind of like when I was doing my no-added sugar days.  I could always get through one because I knew it was just for a day.

I can’t believe I am doing this just as an experiment or just for fun.  I really need to get out more LOL!

Latte time, and a protein bar I had before.

I am really fighting the hungries today.  Pretty sure this is hormone related, so I am just going to have to deal with it.

How did I deal with it?  With some of this x2…

See, for those of you who think keeping the weight off is easy or that I don’t struggle, believe me – I do.  It isn’t as often as it used to be, but I still have those days.

It really turned out to be a beautiful day.  Snow is always so pretty before it gets all dirty and yucky looking.

Dinner time was more heat.  Buffalo shrimp!

I need to get the other light for the lightbox.  I took my bedside lamp back to the bedroom 😀  Maybe an excuse to shop this weekend.

Pixie was watching us during dinner, which was really unusual.

She never eats people food, so not really sure what is up with that.

Working tonight.  Ugh.  At least it is something, though – and tomorrow is Friday, which actually means something to me now!

      Normally I listen to tunes or watch TV – but reading definitely makes the time go by faster, and I found my pace picked up as well. Interesting.

    Maybe your pace picked up because you were irritated by Mr. Taubes? Tee hee!

    (I’ve heard it has a hint of cinnamon.)

    Pixie’s peeking cracked me up. My Elsie-cat used to do that when she was a kitten. I’d be eating dinner, and I’d see this little head-too-big-for-her-body peeking over the edge of the table. (I need to share a few Elsie stories. She had some pretty harrowing experiences as a kitten, but she’s a ripe old 18 now…glad she saved one or two of her nine lives for later!)

      PG – I think you might like the Taubes book. Once you get to the middle, at any rate.

      If irony has cinnamon in it (favorite spice), probably why it tasted so delicious!

    The picture of Pixie made me laugh right out loud!

    I went almost no carb once for two weeks at my doctor’s request. When I came home with the plan I was hysterical because I love my carbs. Mr. Helen looked at me and said, “You are one of the strongest women I know. You can do anything for two weeks.” He was right and my doctor was happy and I did survive it. In thinking about how I eat now, I would say I definitely carb cycle. I’d love to eat way more carbs than I do but I really don’t need them except when I doing endurance training.

      I think we do need carbs in our diet, but I have found my balance to have been swinging a bit far out lately, particularly as I am not training for anything at all. Sometimes that inner 4 year old just doesn’t want to admit that…

    Your cat is so cute. I’m a kitty person (but not a crazy old cat lady).

    I’m very curious to hear how your carb experiment goes. I don’t do well on low carbs at all, but I have definitely lowered the % of carbs I eat in the last year and added in more fats and protein.

    Your cat picis great. I have a cat,well we have 4 cats, and one sits in the chair next to me at the dinner table and waits patiently for vittles from my plate. A real player he is.

    I recently picked up the habit of reading while working out! I find it really easy to do on the bike, on the elliptical today it was a little more difficult but boy does it make the time fly. I do enjoy watching TV but listening to music really does nothing for me.

    That picture of Pixie is hysterical! You get such good pictures of her!

    I actually love to read while I work out. I find it makes the time go faster and I generally still get a good workout keeping my heart rate up.

    Oooh, I love carbs too! Mmm, bagels. I don’t think I could go paleo/low carb but I’m always interested to watch people who do.

    Im a jewish woman who used to polish the bagels off by the dozen (yep dozen).
    I havent had one in almost 17 years (gluten) and am now wondering if, given the popularity of GF living, theres a GF option out there!

    I read when I’m on the bike and when I’m on the treadmill. It really makes indoor exercise go a lot faster! And it’s very helpful when you need to study for a test! 😉

    I bet Pixie smelled the shrimp. 🙂 We don’t feed our cats people food but open a can of tuna and they come running!

    I’m ready for some warmer weather. Then we can ride the bikes burning up the pavement instead of simply burning the tires on the trainer :(.

    In re- the lower carbs: Have you compared how much of a diff. it would make if you forfeit one to two bagel days per week for oatmeal days? Comparing carbs, fat, etc? Not sure of the carbs in bagels, I don’t eat them that often (too bad for me – love those things!) but if you drop a bagel or two, you also drop the sugars that go into the bread/bagel. Your thoughts?

      Well – I eat oatmeal on other days and the bagels are a tradition for John and I to eat. So that is something I really am not inclined to give up. If I just have a bagel and watch the carbs the rest of the day, I can fit it in. My goal on the lower carb days is to be at about 100 g, so I do have some leeway.

    A co-worker of mine is doing the Paleo diet. When she started it, I looked into it but that’s not something I could do. But a day a week should be no problem.
    I’ll have to wait first for the results of my tests at the doctor (more on that on tomorrow’s post), I might want to change my eating habits after that.

    I’m trying to find a balance with carbs as well. I know I need to cut them down (and I am for the most part) but EVERYTHING has carbs in it! Boo! They are soooo good!

    I can’t read anything while I do cardio… I sweat way too much & words would smear into non existence! I am a sweater!!!

    Well, I have read a lot about the Paleao thing & I know people swear by it but I have to eat based on what I can live with long term so like you, I do cycle my days & sometimes I may have more or less carbs… although I have never done a hard core low carbs day like Paleo although during my bodybuilding contest days, those low carb weeks.. hell! I just am not giving up grains & fruit & the rest. My feeling is that a “diet” that asks you to give up whole food groups, especially when there are important vitamins & minerals in certain foods.. well… BUT to each their own, just not me! 🙂 You are making me think though!!! 😉

    And last BUT NOT LEAST – PIXIE!!!! OMG, I love that cat!!! 😀

    I really like your idea of having high carb and low carb days. I would be curious to see how that works out. I don’t watch carbs as much as I would like to but try my best to track them on Keep us posted about the experiment. I need some different ideas and motivation. 🙂
