Happy Halloween and October Wrap Up!

Happy Halloween!  Meet the Candy Corn Vampire!

John and I started off the day different and went out for a bagel.  I woke up yesterday not feeling well, so we didn’t get our normal Sunday breakfast out.  We decided to go on Monday instead.  Nice treat!

We just didn’t get to spend as long yakking and talking as we do on Sunday mornings because there was work to be done.

Plus shipping out the big soap order.

That took up some time to do.  This is the only person I make soap for and I think she sells it at craft shows.

Lunch time! John made up clam chowder yesterday, so that was on the menu with some mango.

On to the monthly goal wrap up and how I did.

1.  Water conservation.  I am going to get wet, wash my face, then turn off the water to soap up the rest of me and my hair.  Then turn the water on and rinse.  This did not last long.  It was cold and I realized that my daydreaming in the shower doesn’t usually occur when I am soaping up, but while rinsing off.  Instead, we converted our upstairs toilet to a low-flow one with a kit.  Good enough!

2. Post a pink picture each day! I did just about every day (I forgot yesterday). Don’t forget to click on the last day!

3. Keep going with Pilates 2x a week.  I did a mix of Pilates and straight up stretching. Feels good.

4.  Try 4 new recipes this month and post them.  I did 3.  Stupid work getting in the way.

5. Be conscious of wheat.  I did not do too well on this one.  I did have some GF days, but I also ate my share of wheat!

Not a lot of progress on those goals.  C’est la vie!  I’ll have a new set to implement tomorrow 😀

Break time!  Almond milk latte.

I also decided to go out for a walk during the warmest part of the day.  I did 3 miles.

I was hungry for dinner later – must have been the walk.  I cooked up turkey burgers tonight, which I put on an oopsie roll (recipe and technique coming this week).

Tasty!

Now the kids are coming and loving our pumpkins!

I think they get more excited about seeing the pumpkins than the treats 😀

John and I also are anticipating the football game tonight.  We are down to the wire. The winner of tonight’s game gets to pick this week’s dinner!  Come on, Chiefs!  I have dried pineapple just waiting for my game snack, too!

Last pink item of October. This is a basket made as part of the Ubumwe Basket Project, which helps   poor women in Rwanda earn money. They make the baskets and get all of the proceeds from the sale of them.

    Good looking eats.

I’m thinking about getting a pilates video for the boyfriend and I to do at home. I think it might help him with his back issues. Do you have a video you recommend?

Stott Pilates has several back workouts and are just good Pilates DVDs at any rate. I think they are called ‘strong and healthy back’ or something like that.

Netflix has a bunch of the Stott pilates workouts, too – so you can stream them.

Holy moly that is a lot of soap!!! Looks so pretty and I’m sure it smells great, too…the box that you sent my coffee in smelled like soap (in a good way)!

I watched an Eco show on the BBC and they profiled 2 different families and had given them energy/water conservation challenges. When they were on the water conservation challenge they had them collect the shower water in a bucket while they were waiting for the water to warm. I did that for a couple of weeks and then would then use it in the garden. I don’t really need it for the garden now though so I stopped doing it. I do think it helped me try to stay mindful of not spending too much time in the shower. Wish the water just heated instantly. Your pumpkins look awesome!

I am glad you are not getting cold in the shower! I am practicing my own water conservation by taking some of my showers at the gym. I don’t think that counts, though, because it is ‘selfish’ water conservation–saving me money, but still using up the water.

As always, I am impressed with your goal making and your accountability. Funny about the oopsie rolls. I ran across that recipe the other day and was thinking about them!

I was very impressed about your pumpkin too! I’ve never seen anyone carve one out in Finland even though they sell halloween pumpkins here nowadays.

    Good looking soap!

The shower thing works during Summer but in Winter it’s way too cold so I would do the same as you and just take a shorter shower.

Don’t be too hard on yourself about your goals: you did great! Especially considering you’ve been very busy.

The soap looks great but a lot of work too.

I don’t want it to get cold. I already don’t want to get out of bed!

I like your serving suggestion for mashed potatoes. Throwing it on top instead of a huge pile. I feel like a plate of hot food.

LOL – those aren’t mashed potatoes. It is a wedge of laughing cow spread on the burger. But mashed sounds good!

Love that soap Lori! Would love to see how you package it. Does it have your name on it? I think its great the way you set goals for yourself. You learn a lot about yourself that way. I think you are very eco conscious and thats a great thing. I love the way you show that by mentioning you eat local grown meat etc and your experiment with the shower. It gives people ideas of what they could do and help them to realize they don’t have to be perfect to make a difference………great going Lori! Hugs! deb

It just goes like that. I don’t package it and the woman who receives it cuts it up and does her own packaging (like a private label).

I love the first pic with the mouse & candy corn! 🙂 I have not even had any yet – wow for me!

I think you did fine for October Lori. You always have a lot of monthly goals so you done good!

I am a no-nonsense shower-er. It’s Mr. Helen that does the daydreaming while rinsing although I give him a break since he works in the cold all day long. I guess I feel like he deserves to stay in the warm water a bit. Anyway, I’m glad you adapted because you do deserve ‘some’ luxuries!

I actually think you are very conscious of wheat and I know for sure I couldn’t go wheat or gluten free.

Okay, how did I miss the fact that you make soap?? Is it hard to make? It would be an interesting Christmas gift I think!

You can never go wrong with bagels! 😀

It’s not hard to make soap, but it takes a while to learn. I used to have a retail shop where I made the soap on the premises. Now I just do it sporadically.

To save water, we installed a hot water re-circulator booster – it attaches at the hot water tank and gets the hot water to the shower on the other end of the house in seconds rather than minutes – it cut way back on our water use
