New food fun day!

New to me foods today – and out of my comfort zone.  First off was breakfast.  I bought some of this the other day.

I was going to get some plain chia seeds, but figured I would dip my toes in the water, so to speak.  It’s got chia seeds, hemp seeds and sesame seeds and bits of dried fruit in it.

This is a serving size – 30 grams (2 tablespoons),  130 calories.  Kind of like oats in that department.  Instructions were to add 1/4 cup of either hot or cold water and let sit for 5 minutes.  I added hot water.

Really?  Seriously? Other than the slime factor look, the bulk eater in me pouted about that serving size. I took a tiny taste.  A little slimy and crunchy at the same time.  Hmmmm…. I decided I needed to go all Lori style on them and put them in a pot with some more water and a mashed banana, then added the liquid egg whites like I do with oats.

Much bigger serving, although very lacking in the looks department.

Verdict?  Okay.  I will not be purchasing them again.  They didn’t fill me up for very long, either, which I can’t quite figure out as they should have.  I thought they would stay expanded in my tummy. Only 9 more servings to go in this bag…

Dinner was also out of my comfort zone.  I went and bought salmon fillets at the store yesterday.

Most of you know I don’t eat fish, but I keep trying periodically hoping things change because it is good for me (the fish and the trying).  I can do tuna sometimes, but I have never bought salmon and tried to cook it.

I decided to leave it to John to cook the fish!  I was nervous about dinner:

I know, it’s silly to be nervous over eating fish, but this is really, really different for me.  John cooked up the salmon in a pan with maple glaze and a ‘maple magic’ seasoning blend (local product).

The verdict? I think I liked it.  I didn’t love it, but I could see myself eating it again.  Salmon doesn’t have a strong  flavor like tuna does, and the meat was moist. John pointed out that it was a lot like eating dark meat turkey – and he is right.  I like dark meat, so I didn’t mind the texture of this.  It is one of those foods that I could get used to eating enough that I might actually come to really like it.  Does that make sense to anyone?  That happens to be fairly often if I eat a food over and over again.

So, I would say 1 for 2 on the experiments today!  Gotta keep Monday’s exciting, right?

Oh I love fish! Especially salmon! I have a bunch of salmon recipes on my blog if you want to branch out. Sometimes baking them with a sauce or glaze takes away the “Fishiness” of it and you might forget you’re eating salmon…. 🙂

I make a homemade chia cereal kinda like that … although mine has buckwheat groats and chia seeds in it … I love it! Since I don’t eat oats, it is a good hot cereal substitute for me!

Today’s dish was fish here too…cod for me and trout for The Boss.

I am not a fan of chia…unless it is a chia pet!

Great job trying the new foods!

LOL on going Lori on that mess and fixing it up. How about using half the serving and mixing it with half a serving of oatmeal. Or maybe doing an overnight treatment on it so the chia would really soak up a lot of fluid. Maybe almond milk instead of water. Or if you’re like me you could just feed it to your neighbor’s chickens.

Good for you on trying salmon! John did an admirable job of cooking it. I like it with just Mrs. Dash coating it and lemon juice after its cooked.

Congrats on trying new foods today. Me and my John love salmon! We almost always cook it on the grill with just a little cracked pepper on it. We’ve learned to not overcook it! Yours looked yummy!I’m with you on the Chia experiment – not enough volume:)

Brave of you – I don’t like seafood or porridge-type of cereals, so I wouldn’t have tried either. Although that cereal might do ok topped on some greek yogurt, now that I look at it…

I have to disagree about salmon and tuna. I dislike salmon very much and I don’t eat it. It taste fishy. I didn’t eat fish till a couple of years ago but I choose the ones that don’t taste too fishy like tuna, tilapia and pangasius for example. I too know it’s good for you but I don’t eat it very much (funny that I eat it tonight though). Bit weird for a girl that lives in a village that is famous for it’s fish 🙂

You and I are the same about fish. I want to like it. I don’t! I can eat tilapia… but that is about it. I will always try a taste of my husbands salmon and cross my fingers I like it- but I always need a glass of water close by…. and I always need the glass of water! 🙁

I love your nervous-about-dinner expression! Most people do think salmon has a strong taste, but it is a firm fish, so maybe its winning you over that way. I do like fish (one of my adult-acquired tastes, though) but my family doesn’t so I don’t fix it much.

Ha – you’re so brave!!! I absolutely cannot eat fish or seafood. I keep thinking maybe I’ll try Red Lobster when they have some buffet option going on so I can sample lots of little things – but that hasn’t happened yet.

Chia seeds are really gummy/gooey looking but they are really healthy. I put a tablespoon into the 1 minute muffin each morning. I can’t really tell it’s even there. I would suggest that – or as Debby said, try mixing a bit in with oats.

Seafood is probably my favorite food to eat! I like most kinds, but I think salmon is probably my favorite. I’ll buy canned salmon from Trader Joe’s, and then mix it in with their vegetable fried rice.

I love the look on your face – mine looks like that a lot when it comes to cooking! 😉

I have wanted to try hemp for a bit now but have not.. and I am not a sesame fan so lucky that you did not like that stuff you bought! 🙂

Good for you! It’s so easy to fall into familiar patterns, so I am impressed you make the effort to step outside of that.

I do love salmon–it’s a regular here. One of my favorite ways to eat it is to poach it with some white wine and olive oil. Easy and good!

Still getting all the comments in my Google Reader feed…sigh. I’ve unsubscribed and re-subscribed, doesn’t help. I miss your daily sunny attitude!

I am sorry about that Alice. I don’t know what to do as it only happens to some people and not everyone, so there is no real solution. I wish I could do something about it.

I am with you on the fish front – salmon still tastes too “fishy” for me. I love tuna steaks though! (but can’t stand canned tuna – go figure!). And chilean sea bass is a meaty fish I love, but my store sells it for $20 a pound so I don’t get it too often.

You eat those shrimp balls – those should count! 😀

  16. Helen

Blech. No salmon for me and I’m a pretty adventurous fish eater too. You are a responsible consumer – that bag of slimy cereal would be straight to the trash in my house. Life is too short for me to eat things I really don’t like!

I LOVE fish but we eat it less than other proteins because it is often more expensive. Which makes NO sense given I live right beside the ocean. Have a great day, oh brave food trier Lori!!!
