Bikes and bird nests

A long ride on tap for Saturday!  I had gone and did a strength workout in the morning as per usual.  The last B workout of stage 1 (which I will recap tomorrow).

It was quite windy, but 50 degrees, and we couldn’t wait to get out.  We started off with sun and several layers to stay warm.  Here is part of the path:

John shed a layer after about 5 miles, but I kept mine on and thought I would shed a layer at mile 10.

After we got to mile 10, just as we were getting ready to pass an older couple walking on the path, John yells to me “Do you want to take your clothes off now?”  😳 😳

It was windy and a hard ride on the way there.  Who was it that decided to do a lifting workout before riding?  Oh yes, that was me.  I thought for sure I was  going to have to walk up the hill we call The B*tch, but I actually made it with some grunting and yelling “come ON!!”

Down the other side for about 2 miles.

Hills never look as steep in photos. Of course, I took off my jacket here before going down and then I was freezing since I was so sweaty.  Going downhill at 20 miles per hour in a headwind and sweaty = very cold!

We reached the lake and it was gorgeous!

It was even windier here, which is always is at the lake.

A few buds on the trees, but still pretty drab around here.  John and I stopped at 2 places for our snack. First up was the Lake George Baking Company

We picked up a couple pastries for each of us and then hit up Cafe Vero for lattes.

First pastry – an almond horn.

I also got a sfogliatelle, which is a shell shaped pastry filled with an orange ricotta cheese mixture – which was fantastic with the latte!

So good.  Burned about 500 calories on the way there and ate 500 for my snack.  See how life balances out?  😀

I felt great on the way home.  Part of that was not riding into a head wind, but  my legs got rested and had a carb boost.  Powered by pastry!  We didn’t even stop on the way home.  I just felt stronger and stronger as we kept going.  Or maybe it was just a biker’s high? Yay!

I am almost ready for our Saratoga rides.

31.5 miles!  Guess I should do strength training before every long ride.  Okay, maybe not… Definitely not.  I will have to adjust my lifting schedule soon.

On Sunday, my family got together for dinner.  Just a few quick pictures.  I made up some macaroon bird’s nests with little malted milk eggs to bring.

Aren’t they cute?

Here is my dinner plate:

Delicious ham, with twice baked mashed potatoes (awesome!) done by my mom.  My sister brought along the asparagus with homemade Hollandaise sauce.   I had seconds of ham and potatoes.

I was a bottomless pit today.  I also ate too much candy.  There were M&Ms a plenty, which I ate more than my share of.  I haven’t had this many sweets in about 6 weeks.

More sweets?  Yes please:

John made a blueberry cobbler.  I wasn’t full even after eating this, but I really just needed to stop eating beacuse I don’t think I will ever feel full. Then it was game time.  Mostly made up games with the nieces.  Don’t you love games like that where the rules are made up as the game goes along??

Now settling in to watch Paris Roubaix.  Can the weekend be over already?

Great ride re-cap. I’m going to have to scout out neat pastry-power up places on my rides, yours look so good! I know what you mean about the WE being over already, though. Routine is sounding good to me right now.

your blog goes to the top of my blog roll when you post, but the first comment sends it to the bottom of the roll.

When I’m riding in the Spring and Fall I always need to stop and either add or take off layers. I hate stopping and am envious with how coordinated the pro cyclists are with adding wind breakers or newspaper at the top of a climb. Glad you and John were able to ride this weekend. I watched Paris Roubaix this morning (no plot spoiler from me:)

I wish we had a team car that could replenish water and take our extra stuff. That would be pretty sweet!

Lovely bike ride and delicious looking pastries!

The nest are so cute…and I could go for some asparagus and Hollandaise…yum!

I am happy to have another day off before I have to go back to work.

Powered by pastry – I think that would work for running, too! Glad you got in such a good ride, and congrats on beating “the bitch”!

So fun to see where you are riding. Thanks for always including such great pictures. Plus, glad to see your Easter food report. I was thinking about you today. I decided to ‘let’ myself have all the sweets and food I wanted, and when I started feeling guilty, I thought, “Lori has days like this and she still maintains her weight loss!” Of course, you have been a bit more successful than me at maintaining. Back to basics tomorrow, right?

Oh, regarding the weights workout before the ride. After my weights workout, I feel so great, like I could walk forever when I take the dogs out. Its the next day I feel like an old lady. Sometimes I think I should just go ahead and take the long walk on the same day as the workout.

Never feel guilty about food. Food is one of life’s great pleasures and not just fuel. All overeating does is slow progress – not stop it.

And yes, back to basics on Monday!

The the photos and your food looks great! I like your advice about overeating. It’s true–a bad day doesn’t have to stop progress. BTW: John’s blueberry cobbler looks delicious!

OMG, John yelling about your clothes – too funny!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a wonderful ride & love the pics!!! Especially those food pics! 😉 Looks like you really enjoyed fun & family time! Very important!!! Your macaroon bird nests were so cute but man, that cobbler looked amazing – I love that stuff!

Great job pushing up those Lake George hills. I always grunt and swear when I’m taking on a steep hill as well…at least when I’m on my bike – when on foot, I’m pretty quiet in my suffering.

Such good eats – Powered by Pastry! LOL – funny.

You definitely eat most amazing stuff on Easter, like those bird nests! Never seen anything like that before.

I think pastry is the perfect source of carbs for long bouts of cardio. 🙂 I almost feel like taking my bike out of storgae and hopping on it when I see your pictures.

Fun weekends always go by too quickly. I’ve never heard of sfogliatelle but it looks so wonderful – I’m sure I’d be addicted.

Yay for bike recaps. I love all your biking expedition pictures. Tis the season. Lucky for you the head wind was on the way there so you didn’t have to battle the wind going home!

Thanks for sharing all of your great pictures. The scenery on your bike ride is beautiful! So are the pastries;) Your bird nest macaroons are so cute, too. Have a nice day!

My favorite line of this post? “Powered by pastry!”

Great job on the biking. I actually ate okay yesterday – I was so busy cooking I ended up having just fruit for breakfast, and we ate around 3:30 and I didn’t eat anything after that. I love ham so much – tons of leftovers!

Great looking food! The bf and I didn’t celebrate Easter and now I wish we had for the food. 🙂

Oh and I got the weight lifting book at the library. I’m excited to start it.

Looks like a wonderful holiday weekend!

I lol’d at the “hills don’t look as steep in pictures”. I’ve got dozens of photos I took to gain pity points, but when I got home and prepared to post them, they didn’t look so steep and daunting. 🙂

Everything looked delicious! We had a repeat smorgasboard from Super Bowl Sunday- pulled pork, chili, mozz sticks, stuffed mushrooms, pizza pinwheels, lots of chips and dip, then dessert… Reboot this morning!

I’ve got to start doing some research to see if any of these bike paths are places we can ride while in Bolton Landing. This trip is slipping up on me quickly. Seemed like an eternity when I began the planning and secured lodging back in January. BTW, so far today, no “extra” posts from you. First time in awhile!

The bike trails really start in Lake George, but it is not far from Bolton Landing. So you could bring your bikes there. I would be happy to ride on the Lake George trails with you if you like, weather permitting. 😀
