Calories add up

Is it Friday yet?  Okay, I guess not.  I didn’t go lifting this morning so I could take a bike ride.  Gotta get in those 400 miles this month!  I am a little behind due to the hot weather and being busy, but I get so many miles on weekends that it shouldn’t be too hard to catch up.  Jinxie jinx!

It was a bit humid this morning, but I knocked out 10 miles pretty quick.  Then it was breakfast time.  I wanted the banana bread pudding, but didn’t want to wait 20 minutes for it to cook – instant gratification, anyone?? – so I poured the batter in the waffle iron that was still hot from John using it.  The result?

It still has the same soft texture, but took 5 minutes.  Me likey!  It was hard to get out of the waffle iron, though.  It was a 2 spatula job because it was soft.

So John’s old desk was put at the curb yesterday and now it has a new home! Somebody took it this morning.  Good for them.

It was a busy work day today right from the start.  Makes the day go by fast.  I was ready for lunch.  Here’s something different:

Pasta!  Actually cheese tortellini. This was leftover from from a couple days ago and it was fast.  I did flip through a catalog while I was eating:

I have been recycling my flower catalogs as soon as they come because I have absolutely no room for new plants, but then I decided that I am going to  expand the front bed and rework the shade garden.  Now I can look at the catalog again!  Like some people obsess over food or shoes or nail polish, I obsess over flowers.   I’ll have to show you diagrams in Friday’s What’s Blooming post of what I have in mind.

I also was reading an interesting article on diet composition comparisons online from the Nutrition Journal (link is PDF).  It  was basically a study of differing levels of sucrose/fructose and HFCS in diets and how that affected weight loss.  The participants were in an equal caloric deficit no matter what the diet was composed of. Turns out that it doesn’t really matter what the diet is comprised of as long as you stick to the calorie goal.  An interesting quote from the article.

It appears that the critical consideration is adherence to
whichever hypocaloric diet is employed

So, any diet will work as long as you stick to it, right?  Compliance is really the most important thing – and long-term compliance.  Anyway, that was an interesting article.

I had a different snack today as well.

Almond milk and some granola.  Not mixed together, but eaten separately.  I was planning on some iced coffee at tutoring, so I decided to save the coffee for later.  I told John that I jinxed my meeting and I was right.  My learner called and cancelled for the evening  😯

It was pretty hot and humid today, so I wasn’t all that hungry for dinner.  I had leftover spinach rice

Plus a protein bar.  It looks like I didn’t eat much today, but my calories are at 1800 already.  Damn things add up quick!

I still have to fit in my latte, though.  I think my day wouldn’t feel complete without it!

Pasta and rice can add up fast. It’s kinda nice that my dinners have been a protein + salad + veggie because the calorie bombs aren’t there anymore (ie carbs). Although I have noticed a little bit of a difference with my muscles and riding. Some mornings my legs are BURNING on my commute. I wonder if it’s the lack of pasta and rice in my diet…?

Maybe not the lack of pasta and rice, but maybe carbs in general. I have found I ride better with more carbs, but I am leaning towards the potato for my carbs – and rice. Especially in the morning after breaking the fast. I do a nice fruit/protein drink which has been awesome.

That waffle makes me feel sad that my waffle maker shit the bed. Calories do add up, but some calories are more beneficial than others. It’s too bad this article didn’t address the harm that excess amounts of sugar/HFCS can do the human body.

You mean you have to STICK TO A DIET for it to work? Dad gum. That’s no fun.

Oh yes, those calories do add up quickly. this is a day I”m not going to add them up. See paragraph #1. I guess that’s why I’m not losing weight…

Interesting combination for lunch but I guess it’s a typical Lori lunch: include the fruit! 🙂

Your learner cancels a lot doesn’t he/she? Or does it only looks that way?

We all want to believe there is some magic formula or combination of foods that will make the weight fall off. Not saying that we don’t function better with better food, but there is that pesky law of thermodynamics.

I have to STICK to an eating plan? Dang it! And please tell me why those calories add up so fast – for me usually on days when I’d like to have a little bit more? Sigh.

When I saw what you ate I immediately thought how well a long ride is going to go for you! Gotta love carbohydrates from pasta and grains when you’re biking a lot!

I doubt the people cancelling is a result of YOU Lori. It’s probably very similar to people with most things – we all want to improve, we sign up, get motivated, but the follow-through is hard.

I’ve been analyzing roses like crazy – can’t wait to start picking through the landscaping and see what would work where!

Your spinach rice looks good – how did you make that? I’m hitting the point where we are needing to carb a little better on Fridays, and there’s only so much spaghetti that I can take…

I need to get my hands on a waffle iron. I’ve been avoiding it since my boyfriend isn’t a fan of clutter but maybe we can find room for it 😛

I love that you have a green thumb. I get so inspired when I see your photos.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

I know – so late today! I have one thing I always say about the calories & that data – my feeling is that my body looks different when I do feed it healthier vs. other food even at the same calories… that is just me but I feel that when I changed to different foods but similar calories, I did look better….

Your food always looks so good! I am so lazy! 🙂
