Good and bad foods

Still in cool morning weather mode.  It was in the 50s when we got up this morning to bike to breakfast, so that meant pants and a jacket!  It was sunny though.  Here is the temp when we arrived to breakfast.

True Adirondack day with cold morning and warming up to about 80 in the afternoon.

I had my delicious bagel.  I honestly don’t think I could ever go grain-free forever.  And I really don’t want to.  I actually eat much less wheat than I used to and I definitely notice a difference when I don’t eat it, but I enjoy all aspects of food.  I am just not so regimented that I could deny myself of any one type of food forever (except mushrooms and olives – I will gladly never eat those).

Maybe part of that comes from not viewing any food as inherently good or bad.  Certainly there are foods that are a better choice nutritionally than others, but a slice of chocolate cake in and of itself isn’t bad.  Food doesn’t have morality – it just is. Once you put food in those categories, how do you feel about yourself if you eat a ‘bad’ food?  My guess is bad.  Then why bother eating it if it going to make you feel bad about yourself?  That’s how you get stuck in that diet mentality trap or the all-or-nothing trap.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed that little side train there.  😀

My lunch:  Greek yogurt with blueberries and shredded gluten wheat with some honey.

Tasty.  I don’t regard the lunch as any different than breakfast, either.  Nutritionally different, yes, but not as far as whether or not I should be eating  either one.

Another thing I look forward to?

John made my latte today and it is extra fluffy.  He has the magic touch.  This picture makes my hair look really short, but I am growing out the layers and they are tucked behind my ears.

At the end of the day, we thought about biking to the Wednesday Take A Bite.  It runs through the end of the month.  Then we just decided to walk up the street to pick up some Chinese food for dinner.  I do like Chinese food, but I get sodium bloat for days normally.  Solution?  Steamed broccoli and shrimp!

This order comes with 12 really large shrimp.  I had 6 in this bowl (probably 4 ounces of shrimp). I don’t know how they season them before steaming, but they are tasty.  I actually think they might be breaded shrimp that goes into the steamer and whatever seasoning is on the breading stays on the shrimp.  Whatever it is, I love it!  I went back for seconds on the broccoli.  I have enough of my dish leftover for a meal tomorrow, too.  Plus there is enough rice to feed all of upstate New York.  I had to measure out 1/2 cup of rice or I would just plop a huge amount in a bowl with a little butter and salt and go to town 😀

We watched the Tour of Colorado on TV

Go cycling!

Then I had my fortune cookie.

Love this:

Funny thing?  John got the same fortune!

I work on that good food /bad food thing. I do get mad at myself when I eat some junky processed crap just cause its there. Also I think there are some foods I just shouldn’t keep in the house. I’m currently trying your “up high “technique. Its working pretty good so far!

Yeah, the up high thing works quite well. Still in the house and I know I *can* have it, but don’t feel impelled to grab it like I would if it was just in the cupboard.

What a great idea for a good, healthy asian meal. I have to watch the msg, but if I ask to have them leave it out, they usually do. However, that means that I have to avoid most of their sauces, and I love Thai. Oh well… BTW: I couldn’t live without grains either, but I have cut down on my carbs.

I don’t think so much good/bad but there are foods that when I eat them make my tummy very uncomfortable! Those foods I try to avoid because of it.

You have expressed perfectly how I feel about so many things in regards to food… I can’t imagine cutting out any one thing forever (unless medically necessary, of course). I too enjoy all aspects of food and feel that it just ‘is.’ Great post!

I’ve been craving Chinese and now you’ve upped the craving with that meal there. Must do something to fix that soon!

I LOVE THAT FORTUNE!!!! I love your ant on food too! Me, not a fan of mushrooms or olives either!

I have to get to my bagel place – been way too long since I have had one! Every bagel day for you, I want one! It is almost pumpkin bagel time! 🙂

Good food, bad food–it’s a puzzlement. I’m just starting to read Gary Taubes book Good Calories, Bad Calories. The minute I declare a food off-limits, my craving starts building. My current approach, which seems to be working very well, is to refrain from outlawing foods, but to try to stay pretty low carb (grain/wheat/sugar carbs especially). I end up having about one serving of those a day. That’s what’s working for me. I must admit that there’s a toasted bagel craving building up in my mind. It will be satisfied one day soon~

I eat pretty much like that as well. I only have bread a couple times a week most of the time and get my carbs from things like potatoes, rice, dairy and fruit. I do better that way and then enjoy those cupcakes when they come around!

What a perfect fortune for you! I am a huge fan of the steamed dishes at chinese restaurants – except the chicken. It always seems to have a weird texture to me. But the seafood or shrimp alone is fabulous!
I am so guilty of putting everything into a good or bad category, but I think it stems from fighting bulimia. There are certain trigger foods that will always be in the “bad” category. I know that everything is okay in moderation, but they will just have that meaning for me because of what they represent. I hope eventually that I can overcome that!

Steamed chicken? There just is something wrong about that LOL.

I have trigger foods as well that can bring on a binge. I try not to label those foods as bad, but I have to think really hard about whether I want them in the house.

Wonderful inspirational post Lori. I’m so with you on the good/bad food thing. For me, EVERYTHING is ok in moderation. (barring medical issues of course) May take a bit longer to get to goal weight, but the journey will be a bit more “livable”. And what wonderful fortunes for you and John!!! Have a wonderful Thursday.

I’m with you on the mushrooms! YUCK

A lot of people ask me this question too…I lost 100 pounds and yet I eat pizza and cheeseburgers and drink beer…my response is that I eat everything but in MODERATION. That is how I am keeping the weight off and not going crazy and bingeing because I’m denying myself foods.

Mmmmmm… Chinese. I almost got that tonight but opted for a quick stromboli and salad. I’ve missed you Lori! I’ve been so consumed with things I’ve forgotten you’re on my favorites list! (It would be a bit easier if you were on blogspot…)

I used to be really, really, really attached to good food / bad food. The more I learn about food and my body, the more I realize it has nothing to do with the food…and everything to do with how my body reacts to it. I know gluten / grain / dairy free makes me feel magnificent, but once in awhile I am willing to suffer…especially for a cupcake!
