Bump in the renovation road

Well, this weekend had a few annoyances.  First off, my apologies if anyone got spam from me this weekend. My address book got hacked and sent out spam.  I think I caught pretty quick after it happened, but not before at least 1 email went out. Password changed and all that.  I am not sure if that is a security hole in yahoo or what, but it was strange. I feel really bad about that. It’s not my fault, obviously, but I still feel bad.

Anyway,  this was the weekend of the Tile Transformations.  Let me start off by saying I actually really like the product itself and recommend it.  However, the color was a problem.

Here is the shower surround it all it’s glory.

P2020018

Dark green grout, dark bluish green tile.  You can see where I replaced a tile.  I took out the ceramic soap dish because the soap never stayed in it and it was in the way. So – I removed it and put in a field tile in it’s place. As you can see, trying to match the old tile didn’t happen, but that was okay because I knew we would be painting over it.

The Tile Transformations is not really paint, but some kind of epoxy.  In looking at the color card and the box, I was trying to choose between White and White Frost. The White actually almost looked like bone colored, so I got the White Frost, which seemed more frosty. You know almost so white that it has a hint of blue?

Day 1 was the epoxy color coat.

P2020020

You mix two parts together.  This was before 2 minutes of stirring.  It was a homogenous color when I was done. It’s doesn’t look all that blue does it?

P2020021

John cut in the edges and I used the roller.  It’s a very sticky product, not really like paint. You have to be careful about not getting the coat too thick or it will sag and leave drips. So, you work in small sections, keeping a wet edge.  I didn’t take any pictures while rolling because I was paranoid it was going to dry too fast (it didn’t).  I was really happy with how it looked when we finished this coat.  Really happy!  It did an amazing job covering up all the colored grout and tile with the one single coat.

P2020022

I was thinking it was looking more blue than I was expecting, but I thought that was because it was wet. We then went out to lunch.  Off to Wakin’ Bacon because we had a coupon.

P2020024

I had a sandwich with turkey, apples, cheese, dried cranberries and honey mustard.  It was quite tasty.

P2020025

Then it was off to pick up the drywall, vanity, counter top and the flooring.  Only it turns out the flooring wasn’t in stock and that won’t be in for 10 days.   WaitingSo, I have totally blown my goal of finishing by next weekend. 3 days into the month and I already missed a goal LOL!

We had to rent a truck to get that stuff home because it wouldn’t fit in the Saturn.

P2020027

We got home and saw that it had dried really blue.

P2030029

That is most definitely not anywhere close to white!  I kind of when “Eeek!” when I saw that.  The color is pretty, actually, but not what I was expecting from the color sample.  I don’t know if the home improvement store messed up the tinting or if the sample color was waaaay off.  I put on my thinking cap to decide what to do here.  I don’t mind the color, but it doesn’t go with the color scheme I wanted for the bathroom.  Rustoleum has a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee on the product, so I think I will call them on Monday. If they will replace the product, I will just do it again with the other white.  This is what I am hoping will happen and they stand by their guarantee on this.  Of course, we had to buy 2 boxes of the product since we had a lot of tile to cover and that costs $240.  If they don’t replace it, then I will work with the blue and make a spa room. I already picked up paint samples just in case.

Honestly, I wasn’t all that upset about it. If the color was something like baby poop yellow, I would have cried. More annoyed than anything because whatever the solution is – it puts me behind schedule. Remember how I said things don’t always go smoothly? This is one of those times and you have be flexible.

Pixie says? “Hmmm… Not sure sure I like the blue.”

P2030033

It is a nice finish, though. Again, I am really happy with the actual look of the product other than the color.  Fingers crossed that I get the outcome I am hoping with after talking with Rustoleum.

On the rest of the room front, walls are now patched.  This:

is now this:

To here.

Lots of good progress there and now it feels like the room is getting put back together. I do have to put a skim coat on and smooth out the walls before painting.   Who knows what color I will end up with?  And yes, the toilet stayed in place the whole time. I was able to drop the drywall back in place right behind it. Too bad I can’t paint with the tank there.

Super Bowl party tonight!

John made these sweets:

Dark chocolate kiss on top of butter snaps. Heated in the oven and then coconut M&M pressed into it.  I am bringing hot crab dip.  I am hoping for the 49ers to win!

Wow, that is a lot of work before a superbowl party! I want a few of John’s snacks for my superbowl party. (I don’t watch the superbowl, but I have some snacks anyway!)

Sorry the color isn’t exactly what you wanted, but I can’t get over how well that product worked.

I know – it’s really an amazing product. This is without the other textured stone layer, too. It really almost doesn’t need it.

Well, that definitely would change the direction you were going with the rest of the bathroom decor – it’s not a bad blue at all, and would look great with pale gray…but when you were expecting white, I’m sure it’s jarring to look at. Still, it looks great. Hope Rustoleum takes care of you tomorrow.

I love the blue, and it would work really well with the gold/cream theme, but maybe not so much with the countertop?

Back when I was reading up on the Rustoleum counter-top product, I saw several Rustoleum reviews in which customers described being shipped completely new kits at no cost when the product didn’t meet their specs. Even when it was the customer’s application error, Rustoleum sent new kits. So I’m sure you’ll have no problem with a color swatch discrepancy.

Yeah, the counter top is what we are worried about looking odd. Good to hear about Rustoleum’s service. I don’t mind (too much) redoing the shower if it means I get the color that I want.

Don’t think the color is that bad but if you wanted white, it can be a bummer. I know I would be upset 🙂

I didn’t get spam mail from you but I had the same thing and up till today I can’t get my email back up and running on my computer. So annoying. I’m glad it still works on my phone so I can see it but it irritates me I can’t get it working again.

That color change is just wrong. And I say that as a person who really likes blue. I hope Rustoleum lives up to their guarantee and helps you out! The product did a great job though.

I don’t think you should say you didn’t make your goal – it’s not your fault the flooring is available!

Sorry about the white to blue that wasn’t planned. It’s actually nice but makes the bathtub look dull and unless you’re replacing that, maybe a phone call is the right thing to do. More work though. Ugh!

Food looks delish! YAY John on such a decadent treat.

LOVE renovations! They sure can be frustrating, though! Looks good. I like the hint of blue. Might look less like a hospital shower…less “sterile”
Might still be worth a call, too!

I had so many comments & then I got to the treat pic & lost my mind! 😉 OK, you amaze me with all you do – amazing!!! Pixie – she is so cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When we painted the dining room years ago, it was such a blinding white that we decided we had to paint over it with a more subtle white. Sometimes you just don’t know until you get it on the walls.

I like the blue, but I can imagine how annoying it is if you thought it was going to be white. John looks very “at home” in the Home Depot truck! And Pixie looks adorable everywhere. Have a great week Lori!!

I know you were hoping for a white but the blue really is pretty and it looks soooo much better than the green grout before. Does the coating mean you won’t have to worry about cleaning grout anymore? It seems almost too good to be true. Fingers crossed you can get the right color but even if you can’t, as you mentioned, it’s not a bad color and still is light enough that you can work with it.

It is a very pretty color, so if they don’t replace it – I won’t be crying about it. It’s just not the color advertised on the swatch. It covers everything and no grout cleaning. It is a wonderful product. Even despite the color issue – I totally recommend it. We haven’t even put the stone finish layer on because we stopped right when we saw the color issue.
