Test driving

It was weird not working on the bathroom this weekend.  The project was only 6 weeks or so, but it did take up my weekends!  As promised after this was done, we were taking a peek at some cars.  We have a Saturn wagon that we bought new in 2000.  It’s an old car now.  It has given us a lot of good years. We have close to 200,000 miles on the car and now it eats oil like I can eat Christmas cookies.  We do want to keep it as a second car, though,  for when John goes on trips so I can get around without having to rely on others.

We decided to look at hybrid cars as carbon footprint is important to us, as well as reliability and price.  So, we checked out the Prius.

We were trying to decide between new and used.  I really would rather have the Prius than the Prius C.  We drove both.  My first experience with a hybrid car.

The Prius C is the ‘budget’ model and you definitely can tell the difference. It is about $5000 less than the regular Prius.  We also have the option of a new 2012 model, which would be less.  However, there are limited options of what is available.  We have a bit of decision making to do.

After driving, we headed out with a Groupon for lunch at Irish Times.

Breakfast for lunch? Yes please!

The weather was fairly depressing all weekend.  It snowed all weekend, but not much in the way of accumulation.  It is warming up into the upper 30s, but still pretty icky.

However, I do spy with my little eye this weekend coming up:

Hopefully that forecast holds and I will have my bike on the rooaaaddd!  Not that I’m excited or anything.

It’s the first Monday of the month coming up and we will be doing an AIM post, so be sure to check back for that.

I won’t tell you that we are looking at 65 and 66 next weekend. I can’t wait either. We are solid Toyota fans and although we don’t have a Prius, I’ve heard nothing but good things from the people we know who do!

We buy a new car about as often as you, so it really is a treat to do the test drives…and also, pick something good because you know you’ll have it for a long time!

Oooh, new car! I have about 100,000 miles to go before I get to your mileage, and I’m hoping my car will last that long! But a new car is very very fun.

I LOVE my Prius! It’s a 2006. DH found it for me to use since I travel so much for tutoring. I travel at least 30 additional miles (just for work) daily on top of my normal driving and fill up every week and a half to 2 weeks. It’s definitely saved money, especially now with gas prices going up again.

Ooh, the Prius is my lottery car! New or used, I don’t care!

After a run of gray, cold days, we’re looking at a sunny but coolish week and then bliss next weekend. I need to get my bike to the shop for a tune-up.

New (or old-new) car buying is so much fun! My first car was a 2000 and I bought it off of a 3 year lease in 2003. I bought my latest car about a month ago brand new and I told Ben that will be my first and last brand-new, new car. I think new cars are pretty fun and luxurious but from a practicality standpoint, you’re better off getting one a year to 3 years old, especially if you aren’t driving it that much (which is the case for me).

Can’t wait to see what you pick. Soooo much fun!!

You may want to research how long the battery lasts. I think a new battery costs several thousands of dollars and I “think” (not sure) they go out around 150,000 miles.

I just replaced mine (well, actually my husband the auto tech did). I just hit 80,000 miles and my battery was $190 on Amazon. Far from “thousands of dollars.”

Oh, that is good. My father-in-law bought one of these so I had done a little research. Are you talking about the bigger, more expensive battery of the two?

        1. Chris

I think we might be talking about two different things. They have the hybrid battery packs on ebay for around $700 to $2200.

I need a new car this year too (mine is from 1999) and I don’t give a crap about cars LOL so I don’t look forward to car shopping at all but it has to be done.

Love a good Groupon deal, the lunch looks delicious. You asked if we have them too and we have since about last year and it’s growing ever since: more and more deals available. Love it.

Heard all great things about the Prius & tons of them on the road here too! I have a 2004 Toyota Corolla & it has been great to me! Would like a new car with butt warmers though – I know it is CA but we are babies & mid 60’s is cold to us! 😉

We had the Camry Hybrid for a few years when it was first released. I LOVED the gas savings and it was such a nice, quiet ride. Good luck on your search, there are lots of hybrids out there now, not just the Prius.

I love when you show pictures of your neighborhood and town- it looks like such a nice, old-fashioned sort of small town. I love those kinds of places. And it looks nice with all the snow!

I’m sending warm, snow melting wishes your way Lori. Love the rose picture on your march goal post (the post about your month’s goals, not a goal post as in a football field. HA!) and that picture of Lazy Pixie with the cords? So funny. Have a great week Lori.
