What’s Blooming!

I still can’t believe how green the garden is.  Or the lawn. Usually it looks a bit brown in August.

The lawn is about 80% crabgrass, but at least it is green.

Nothing new in the garden, but still blooms.

Midseason flush for the scentimental:

I had forgotten to put away my watering can. I get distracted sometimes and set it down and then forget it for days, especially when it rains.  It looks kind of neat here, though.

It may be August, but our nights have been cool.  We hit 48 the other night! 😯  I spied this on my burning bush.

It can’t be turning already, can it??

I actually also noticed the tiniest hint of color on the sedum, too.

I fully have the houseplant bee-in-the-bonnet now.  (I can just hear John when he reads this).  I got that orchid the other day, then I decided on Friday to take a break from work and visit the greenhouse.  I went to Garden Time to check out their houseplants and some were on sale!

I don’t know what these are, and the person working was not a houseplant specialist, so I will have to do some research.

Then I got 2 begonias because I loved how they looked!  These will not flower. They are all just for the foliage (foilage – hahaha!)

And this uber cool one:

Pixie staking claim already:

I need some containers to put these in and I decided to venture into the attic above our shop that is attached to the back of the house and see what might be up there.  It’s got a cool trap door complete with a winch to open it.

Secret hideaway!

It’s pretty scary up there, though.  And dirty. I don’t know if I have mentioned this before, but the shop used to be the home of the Fort Edward Gun Club in the 1950s.  When we first moved in, we found a lot of remnants from that time, including bullets!  There are tons of old paper targets in the attic and various things not related to the gun club.  Over the years we have picked our way through it and cleaned a lot out, but there is still stuff up there.  I reminded myself that I got my tetanus shot updated last fall and headed up.

I didn’t find much for using as a planter, but I did find a couple interesting things.  Newspaper from 1948:

And this box:

It’s empty (thank goodness).  There are some things I want to just keep for when we sell the house as sort of a historical marker and I think this box will be one of them.  It has a label on it where it was shipped from.

Anyhoo, I thought you might find that neat. Guess I will be looking elsewhere for planters, though!

There is an awesome weather weekend coming up. I will be solo biking!

You are funny with your houseplant bug! A new way to expand the garden!! The begonias with the decorative leaves are amazing, aren’t they? I have one outside, but I haven’t found the right spot for it yet. Your porch looks so pretty with the garden in front of it. Or should I say the garden looks beautiful with the porch as a backdrop? And the blue watering can with the yellow flowers is perfect.

The whole gun club in the attic is kind of scary. I don’t like guns. But that newspaper and the box are kinda cool!

I have only ever worked with the outdoor begonias with the waxy leaves, so these are all new to me! Yay! I do like the look of the porch. Interesting thing is – that lower apron is vinyl siding that is covering up the original front. It is kind of angled out and not true to the original house. We are afraid to take it down and see how bad it looks under there, but I have been tempted at times to go ahead and try to rehab that.

Well…..my kitty, Mr. Boo, was investigating MY houseplants today. I wasn’t aware of this until I heard the crash. It was a plastic pot, so it didn’t break….just spilled dirt all over. I probably should re-pot the plant anyway. Guess I need sturdier plant stands…or a less nosy cat!

    Pixie – 🙂

OK. love the blooms as always & that COOL ONE is cool!!!!! What is it?

I LOVE your attic & the story behind it & what you showed us. I grew up back east in small towns with old cemeteries & old homes so I get this & the stories I heard! 🙂

Lori, I am a history and genealogical fan. You might want to contact the local historical society and genealogical societies and see if they would be interested in doing some sleuthing for you in the attic! Wish I lived close enough!

There isn’t much left in the attic – but what a good idea to contact the historical society! I would like to see if there are any old pictures of our house available.

Do you have a Pixie free zone for your plants? The one on the right makes me think of dumbcane which is poisonous to cats. I’m not 100% on your plant but there are a lot of plants that are poisonous to cats. I too have cats and gave up on indoor plants years ago. Some wouldn’t even notice them but others would do anything possible to get to the plants – even ones I hung from the 12′ ceiling. Nothing like hearing a cat jump repeatedly at 3:00 a.m. trying to snag the chenille plant flowers.

    That’s an interesting ammo box.

Hope you have a good weekend.

The 2 unidentified plants are out of reach of Pixie for right now. I looked up the dumbcane and neither of these plants are one of those.

She does like to chew on my plumeria plant, but I am hoping that if these are on stands and ‘out of sight, out of mind’ that she will ignore them.

At one point in time, I used one of those ammo boxes as a planter. I packed the bottom with foam peanuts and then put the dirt on top. I thought it made a cool statement to have flowers (marigolds, I think) poking out instead of bullets. 🙂 I wonder what I did with it…

  7. Kim

I was going to suggest the same thing that Cammy said – could the ammo box become a planter?
I love the history tied in to your house!!!

Well……..the one on the right i’m 90% sure its a dracena…different varieties out there but i’m pretty sure…..the one on the left i need a better picture i think but even then i’m not sure i could name it…..I’ve never gotten along well with begonias but we have an understanding…..i don’t buy them ..they don’t die on me..LOL! Overwatering is the biggest problem with them but if you do well with outdoor ones then these will probably do fine…..

I have two pothos ivies that i keep up high that Jinx leaves alone and a Mycantha i think its called with red veins in the leaves in my master bath…he chewed a few leaves but has since seemed to loose interest… I’ve often thought of buying wall hangers….I don’t think Jinx would be as determined to reach them as Molly’s cats. LOL! But at least he couldn’t just sit there next to it and eat it ya know…Best of luck! Hugs! deb

Your garden picture from the street(or sidewalk?) looks so gorgeous – just lush and green and very appealing. Plus the new pathway looks great!

Nifty box; it’s cool that you have such memorabilia in the attic.

  10. Fran

Wow what an exciting addict you have.

I agree with Shelley on the view from the street, it’s so pretty.

A lot of the plants in our garden don’t bloom as much as other years, they have been suffering a lot from the heat that we normally don’t have. I’m going to the plant center in the next 3 weeks to finally buy a couple of new plants for inside the house.

  11. Sharon

I’m spending today catching up on blog reading so am commenting on all posts I’ve missed right here. LOL! The sidewalk looks great. I think John did a super job even if he isn’t totally happy with the first part. I love the 48 degrees and am so ready to see some of those here. But I know your winters are longer and harsher than mine, so we probably don’t view that 48 degrees exactly the same way. Your garden look terrific.

  12. Elizabeth

I love your yard! I really want to do more with ours. Every year I have all these plans for things, but it doesn’t quite get done. Our grass is unusually green from all the rain we’ve had this year.
