A little jogging

Gym time!  It was hard to get up today because I stayed up too late reading 😳  Don’t you hate when that happens? I kept saying “5 more minutes, then I will turn off the light” One hour later and I knew I would be really tired today 😀

It hadn’t started precipitating when I left for the gym, but it was coming.

Today’s lower body workout:

Exercise Set/rep
Lying leg press 3 sets of 10
Seated leg extension 3 sets of 10
Seated hamstring curl 3 sets of 10
Barbell deadlifts 3 sets of 10
Stiff-legged deadlifts 3 sets of 10
Standing calf raises 3 sets of 10

Before doing this, I got on the treadmill and did 2.25 miles.  I actually jogged for 1.5 miles of that with 3 intervals of jogging for 1/2 a mile with a walking break in between each one.  The past few weeks I have been slowly building up the time I spend jogging versus walking. I have to say that I am encouraged by being able to do this. Granted, my pace is barely above a very brisk walk, but its a start.

I think I just have to forever forget that I ran much faster in the past before my back injuy and just accept that it won’t ever be the same.  I think the last time I tried to get back into running I was pushing too hard, too fast and it felt so awful on my leg that I gave up.  My leg seems to be okay the day following the jogging currently. It feels a little funny, but nothing uncomfortable. So I will continue and see where this leads.

Why I seem to want to keep trying running is something I don’t get – although part of it probably has to do with the fact that it was easier to maintain my weight when I was running along with lifting and biking. I also don’t like not doing something that I used to be able to do. It’s funny, though, because I don’t have any desire to want to do chin ups again 😀

It started to sleet when I left the gym. It seemed like it was going to be a horrible weather day, but then after a couple hours it turned to all rain instead of all the snow we were supposed to get. As long as this doesn’t freeze overnight, we should be okay tomorrow.

My breakfast today: Protein waffles, but instead of being topped with blueberries – I sauteed a banana and added a bit of coconut butter.

Looks like scallops, right? 🙂

On the house front, we got our new living room light and it actually installed really easily. It arrived and next thing I knew – John had it up and working!  I like it when things happen and I didn’t have to do anything.

It’s very pretty and makes me happy.  I will say that out loud. Material things do make me happy… or happier, because I was happy before the light came.  Now we need a couple floor lamps as our current ones are kind of broken. Each paycheck I get one more thing for the house. Guess it’s lamps next 😀

I love your new light fixture!!!
I’ve said more than once that shopping is a definite mood lifter!!!
I completely understand why you want to be able to run again – I never like to give things up that I used to be able to do either!

What a beautiful light fixture – I can see how that would make you happy 🙂

I am really proud of what I can still do but so much less focused on pace than I used to be. I know for a fact it’s because I don’t race anymore. When training, it’s so important to hit certain goals in order to make race pace. It feels good mentally to me to know if I go out and start to run and just don’t feel it, I can switch to walk/run or all walk even without feeling guilty.

I think you really like the way your body looked and how you felt back when you did a bit of running and that has stayed somewhere in your brain which is why you keep trying. You’re doing it right this time – pushing isn’t even necessary!

I actually kind of miss the races. They were always fun. I don’t really do pacing for races, so I didn’t have that much pressure on me for them.

Jogging also a nice change in winter. As much as I love having my bike available in the winter on the trainer, it just isn’t as much fun as being outside 😀

I then need YOU to come decorate 🙂

Glad that you are trying the running & doing OK with it…. like you, i keep weight off better with the cardio & running too.. AND in my 40’s when I went thru the have to do chin ups phase – late 40’s.. don’t have the desire to have to do those again! 🙂

    LOVE that lamp!!!!!

No pressure on the running, just do what feels good. It’s also a nice quick endorphin rush, which helps me feel better about myself and then I tend to make better food choices as well. A positive circle, if you will.

Pretty light. My eyesight is so bad that I need clear, bright lights or I just feel blind in my own house, so we have the basics when it comes to lighting, nothing decorative.

Buying overhead lighting and lamps is something that I do enjoy spending money on. It seems like they are a relatively good deal for the pleasure they give. You know, as bad as my legs/back/knees are, I still will burst into a little jog once in a while. I think it actually feels good to move your body that way instead of walking. If only it didn’t hurt so much LOL. Anyway, I get why you keep trying it.

It wasn’t until I was 45 yrs old that I even started jogging, and now I can’t imagine life without it. Some days when I get home from work, and know the dreadmill-not a typo- is sitting in the guest room waiting for me, I cringe. Then I think to myself, “well I will just get on and do my 5 miles at whatever pace is comfortable”. So last night I walked, got bored and about mile 3 put it on 5.2 and went for it. So it took my 62.5 minutes, I didn’t care, I felt an amazing accomplishment when done. So I am with you, the pace doesn’t matter, just so long as we are moving our bodies.
Remember slow and steady wins the race anyhow.

I do love exercise. I don’t necessarily love running, but it is nice to have options. I would be a lot more devastated if I couldn’t bike anymore, but you always find a way to move.

I think it’s good that you are doing some jogging now that bike season is over. The cardio in combination with the lifting is great. I still love running even though it has been crappy for 2 years now. I am thinking about next year, some part of me wants to train for a race but I think I will be happier if I run like Helen does: just for me and no racing. But I do use a schedule then otherwise I end up doing the same thing over and over again. I think I will be focussing on walking next year instead of running a race.

Good and happy for you jogging goes well now.
