Ready for hiking!

Now that weather is getting relatively warmer…and by warmer I mean getting above freezing… it’s making me think about being outdoors and doing that stuff I love to do!

Okay, we have a ways to go.  The snow is getting that yucky dirty look now.

One of my goals for 2015 is to go hiking. We never did it last year. In order to cement the decision, both John and I got some hiking boots last night.  On sale, of course 😀  Would I have it any other way??

I tried on some Merrells and these Hi-Tec.  The Merrells went up higher on the ankle, which I actually thought I wanted at first for support until I tried them on and they were very uncomfortable around my ankle area. Then I tried on the Hi-Tec Banderas and they are super comfortable! Heavy, too, so they should stand up to the Adirondack trails.  I don’t know as I would have normally bought salmon colored shoes, but when the shoe fits and it is on sale, can’t really quibble about the color, right? I checked out their website and they even have directions for breaking in the hiking boots.

There are so many hiking trails in the Adirondacks. You can try to be what is called a 46er, which is to have hiked all 46 high peaks in the Adirondacks. Not sure I really want to go for that as there is too much biking to be done, but it will be a nice change up for activity and get us to see parts we don’t on the cycles.

Now to keep waiting for the snow to melt – and quit falling 😀

I really love it that you are hiking too. Something we have in common! I would just start with those 46 hikes and just see when you want to go. I have a couple of books with maps for trails all over the country. You walk from west to east for example. You do a part everytime and start next time where you finished. I have only done 3 parts of 3 different routes so far because most of my walks are organized. But the trails aren’t going anywhere so I can always do them.

I really look forward to your hiking adventures!

Oh and as said on FB already: we have the same color for our shoes (and I don’t like the ones that are higher on the ankle either).

Oh one tip: use your shoes on shorter walks first so when you do a long hike you won’t get blisters (made that mistake myself with new shoes)

I love hiking. You get to see a part of nature you can’t see any other way. Can’t wait to hear about your adventures!

You certainly have some beautiful hiking trails in your neck of the woods. Enjoy those new hikers. I think you will look FABulous in the salmon and brown boots.

Function before fashion – always – when it comes to exercise gear!

I fell in love with hiking when we did the Grand Canyon. Each year since I’ve said I will do at least 1 hike a week, even if it’s a short one… and then I don’t. Maybe that will remedy itself this year.

After yesterday’s snowfall, we might have more snow than you. Something is so very wrong with this picture!

I guess I never knew you had to have special hiking shoes – well, in the midwest we are pretty flat so gym shoes are fine, maybe for the hills?

Love the shoes. I suspect hiking shoes are like running/training shoes. It’s about the fit and function more than the color. 🙂 Hiking shoes are on my someday-maybe list. We have a local hiking club but most of their hikes are in river bottoms (snakes! bogs!), so I’m not sure how much hiking I’d do.

I will have to invest in some hiking shoes, as well. Last year we boated from camp across the lake in Paradox, tied it to a tree and climbed up the hill about 2 miles to find a lone pond with so many huge fish jumping. Needless to say that stopped our hiking in its’ tracks (plus David’s back can only handle so much). But I knew than that if I was going to do any more and try to get a few of those 46 off the list, I would need new shoes. With spring approaching it’s time to shop. However, to day if it is sunny and above 40 when I get home, I do think I may venture out in our development and do some figure 8’s to just be outdoors. Dodging snowy roadsides, puddles and ice.
