Sliding snow

Temps are starting to warm up a smidge!  The overnights have been below freezing still, but it has warmed up into the low 40s during the day so we have been getting some snow melt.  We have been taking walks outside the last couple of days because the temps were nice enough to.  The walk itself is still pretty difficult at times, though.

Some walks are nice and clear for short sections:

Others not so much:

That is really annoying.  Not to mention you can get splashed with water from cars driving through the water in the road. Then there are those sections which are just overrun with water from melting snow.  But, it is getting better.  It was nice just to be outside without wincing, too!

Our neighbor had snow cleared from the back end of her driveway today with a front loader into the side yard, which we now get to look at until it melts.

She has a slate roof like we do and snow doesn’t sit on a slate roof for too long before it slides off in a big avalanche after it gets heavy enough. Every snow storm we will get sliding snow. It sounds a little bizarre from inside of the house and even though we lived for 8 years in a house with slate before this, I never quite got used to the avalanche sound coming from overhead.  Kind of nice, though, because you don’t have to worry about the roof caving in from snow.

We had a section of snow that just slid today, which was a huge pile from on top of the roof and the back porch roof.

That didn’t get much sun and so the snow didn’t slide off until today with a huge whoosh!

You definitely do not wanting to be standing below that.  It’s super dense and heavy. The sad thing? I had some garden ornaments in the path of that and I think they probably got totally smooshed, particularly the metal planters. Now I know for next year.

    CRAZY!!!
we walked to school in the sleet the other day and I just kept telling myself too too too soon it will be sweltering here.
    I hope.

We were blessed with some rain and overnight did not refreeze so more and more of our sidewalks are getting clear. We have a lot identical to yours though because of not being cleared in the first place so they iced up. The snow banks are getting smaller too. It won’t be long before I get to run outside… just need the temps to stay up or I need it to not rain/sleet on the weekend because then I could drive to the park and run the roads there. I’m breathless with anticipation.

Hopefully your garden ornaments are just buried and not smooshed!

I can’t believe how much snow you guys got this year. We really didn’t get much and most of it has melted away now. The ground actually is looking pretty crispy and I’m wondering if the lack of usual snow means less water melting into the ground and more lawn watering this Spring…

The slushy melting phase of Spring is never exciting but does it ever feel good to be outside!!

I actually broke with southern tradition and shoveled the sidewalk to my door and a section of my driveway to the mailbox. People were looking at me like I’d lost my mind. LOL

And I learned of the splashing slush too late. I had my car window cracked open (I’d just left the gym) and a truck passed me just about the time we came to a slush pond. Eeeek! Needless to say, I cooled down in a hurry. 🙂

Ahh, you have rooftop symphonies too! Mine are impressive percussion arrangements every fall when the gazillion ancient oak trees surrounding my house shed their acorns. Accented by occasional branches breaking free.

I’m glad that you are starting to see an end to all of that snow – hopefully it will keep melting a bit more each day!! I would probably freak out if I happened to be under the sliding snow when it finally fell.

I’m glad that the snow is finally melting a bit. We don’t have a duty to clear the walks in front of our house so when we got snow, most walks look like the second photo you posted. That’s one of the reasons I don’t like snow, makes it difficult to walk.

This is the time of year I hate the most – all the snow is dirty and ugly and over the weekend it was in the 50s and in the parking lots are just giant piles of snow – so ready for it to be gone! I should probably just move to Key West and never have to worry about snow though 😀
