Root canal and dutch treats!

Monday was D-day on the root canal. Having had 2 crowns and a painful experience with one of them, I guess it was understandable that I had anxiety about  a full-blown root canal.

I double checked with the dentist to make sure I needed one because after my tooth broke, it felt a lot better. He looked at the x-rays and pointed out the dark shadow in the root area, which was a sign of problems, and thought it was best to do the root canal, but it was up to me. I figured it would be best. I have to say my dentist was great! He does 2-3 root canals a day, so it’s old hat to him and his assistant. They got my  gums numb before the injections and left me alone. So, I had to take a picture, right?

The shots didn’t hurt and I felt no pain at all. Once he got into the root and made sure there was no pain, I was given some noise canceling headphones and a choice of music (classical guitar for me) and then I was all set. The root was necrotic inside, so it definitely was a good choice to get it done and soon.  I go back in 2 weeks to start the process with the crown.

I got a package in the mail from Fran with Dutch treats in it after we got back from the dentist! That was nice to receive after the root canal :

These are typical Dutch treats.  Very different from US snacks! One is a licorice mix of sweet and sweet/salty licorice. That was a little different. I’m not a big fan of anise. I am curious to see what my nieces think of these when I see them this weekend. They like pretty much any candy. The other candy was a white peppermint, which I love. I love mint anyway and this hits the spot.  Thanks Fran!

I didn’t do any exercise yesterday, but a day off never hurts. Today I was back on the treadmill and with my soft diet.  I got some of these to drink and they are pretty good:

These are sweetened with stevia. I cannot stand the bitter taste of Splenda, but stevia is less bitter to me.  These were on the sweet side and I like the Cappucino flavor the best.  Normally I eat a protein bar mid morning, so this was good in place of that. I can chew on the one side of my mouth, but I am so tired of one-sided chewing since I broke the darn tooth 2 weeks ago.  First world problems.

Lunch:

Egg sandwich. I got the potato Arnold Sandwich thins. Again, the only variety that doesn’t have Splenda in it. Seriously, why is it in every single darn thing??  I know I’m an outlier at the bitter taste, but goodness me.

On another happy, happy note – we just booked our flights for our 20th anniversary trip this fall. We are going to Ireland!  We are so excited. We’ve been collecting mileage points and finally got the tickets yesterday.  Now to plan the itinerary. We are flying in to Shannon and staying mostly in the southwest part of the island with a day trip to Dublin. This will be a long awaited vacation, that’s for sure.

I think this gives me kind of a goal to work on feeling great when we go abroad. I want to be in the best shape that I can be in by that point. Keeping the trip in mind will keep me from reaching for that second cookie or handful of nuts. 😀

How exciting to be going to Ireland! I’ve always wanted to go! OH and your trunk from your previous post looks just beautiful! Awesome job!! 🙂

    Yay Dutch treats! 🙂

Glad the root canal went so smoothly for you. Sounds like your dentist has it down to a science.

How exciting to go to Ireland! My parents went there about 10 years ago and really liked it.

How exciting to actually have your flights booked to Ireland!! Its on my bucket list, along with England.

Your doc sounds great at the root canal thing. My re-root canal went well today, but I didn’t get the noise canceling earphones–a nice touch!

The sense of taste fascinates me. I like the taste of Splenda as much as I like sugar, only I don’t want to keep eating it, like when I eat sugar. And Truvia tastes bitter to me! Oh, and I like licorice too 🙂

The taste thing is weird, and it’s really, really annoying to have to check things you wouldn’t think about. Like cereal or sandwich thins or nuts. Those Emerald flavored nuts have stevia in them. I don’t drink diet drinks, I just do water, unsweetened iced tea or selzter water. Occasionaly I will get a real deal soda, but that is pretty rare.

Oh how exciting for you to be going to Ireland!! Is it your first trip overseas? You’ll love it – music is everywhere Lori! So excited for you. Oh lord, I’ve had those salty licorice sweets in Denmark (I not so discretely spat mine in the garden). Not to my taste at all. Artificial sweeteners taste weird to me too so I hear ya! Not long now until you get your crown and your mouth will be all better. Looking forward to your weather heating up so I can visit your garden. So hot here I’m hiding in the house and watching the garden grow like the proverbial magical bean stalk. That’s what happens in the tropics – high humidity and heat, storms with rain and things literally grow insanely wild and quickly.

I’ve been to Japan (loooong flight) and John and I took a couple cruises, but of course that was by boat. We really are going to have fun planning what to do!

Glad to see the package arrived! I choose the licorice because I always hear most people outside The Netherlands don’t like it and you are not a fan too 🙂 Curious what your nieces think of it.

How exciting that you are going to Ireland? Are you going long? Is there a chance we can try to meet there? Flying to Ireland can be really cheap for me (less than USD 100 for a return flight). Maybe we should have email contact about it? That is if you would like to try to work something out?

Glad to hear your root canal wasn’t that bad.

Licorice is like black jelly beans. I think you love it or hate it. I guess that’s what black jelly beans are anyway LOL. We are going to Ireland for a week. Sat through Sat. Let’s chat about it!

Answering your question about Bella: unfortunately it’s her other leg this time. The one that had surgery last year is better now than before.

Glad to hear your root canal went so well. I’ve only had one don by my dentist at the time, and it was a disaster that had to be redone by a specialist. Now the dentist I use only refers to a specialist but I’m hoping to never have another one anyway lol!

YAY for booked tickets!!! That makes the trip feel real, doesn’t it?

  9. Beverly

Ireland?!? So exciting!! I’m super jealous!! It’s definitely on my bucket list. My hubs and I are celebrating 20 years this year as well and I have our tickets to Maine bought (we went for our 10 year and loved it). Maybe Ireland for our 25 or 30. 🙂

Glad to hear your root canal went well. So glad to hear they give you noise cancelling headphones. The noise of drills gives me the skeevies!

I take pictures too when doctors leave the room 🙂 Although looking at your dentist pic gave me a chill up my spine…yikes! Glad it all went well.

Hope you’ll be back to two-sided eating very soon!

I’ve always wanted to go to Ireland! Irish music, the gorgeous green coastline, Dublin–what a great 20th anniversary trip!

I am the master at teeth work so I know all about this Lori! HUGE HUGS!!! Yes, once the root is dead, no feeling but it is when the novacaine wears off.

HOW EXCITING on your trip!!! DESERVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got the same candy from Fran – so nice! Except I had the bag open and Jacob walked by, popped a piece of the licorice in his mouth and nearly died because he thought it was chocolate – once he had chocolate on the brain, he couldn’t try it again 😀
