Capital District Flower Show

Happy Spring!!  It’s finally here. Of course, the first day of spring and it didn’t even make it to 40 degrees, but the flower show made up for that 😀

We took my mother down to see all the flowers. This event is held at the Hudson Valley Community College and they set it up in 4 days.  The first part of the show was the floral arrangment area. This is where people submit themed arrangements such as the Hand Picked:

Fantasy Flowers:

Garment District:

That seems very Project Runway, doesn’t it?

Next was the garden club area. The daylily society, Audubon, hosta, ect. Plus the orchid growers:

Is this orchid the most amazing blue or what? Makes me want to get one.

Then the big displays. The theme was  vision of middle earth or something like that. It’s Hobbiton!

It blows my mind that they can do this in 4 days. Blows my mind.

A She Shed (I love the shed, hate that term):

This area smelled amazing with all the blooming hyacinth:

Cyclamen:

Then the sand sculptor with the never finished project:

Then it was time for shopping. Funny bit – I felt someone tug at my shoulder and I figured I dropped something – and it turns out to be my dentist LOL! We had talked about the flower show at my last appointment. Guess he came down to spend all that root canal money I gave him…

In the vendor section, we met up with a customer of John’s business who was selling her soap.  They are from PA. It’s always nice to put a face to a name!

I bought a couple bars. I might have to do this show next year.

My mom and I each bought one of these garden stakes:

This will look really cute over a pot of flowers.

I also bought some bulbs called Japanese Wonder Flowers. I don’t know how well they will grow or anything, but I couldn’t resist. Normally I like to plan where stuff goes and then buy plants, but like every gardener out there – I will see something I like and then figure out a home for it later! (AKA sucker).

I’ll stop here so I don’t blow up your reader with pictures. It was hard enough paring the photos down. I need to start a garden blog.  Now I have lots of ideas and more excitement for the growing season – if that is even possible!

I checked in, hoping to see your report from the flower show! I had a flower filled weekend too, with visits to several nice nurseries. Maybe I’ll get a post up later tonight! The show looks fabulous. I had to look up those Japanese wonder flowers. They look very pretty. I’ll be interested to see how they do for you! I like that she shed too (and hate the name too 🙂 ) Maybe a someday project for the yard. after the watering system, and the chicken coop, and ……. Thanks for sharing your fun trip!

The wonder flowers do look pretty. They are bare root, so we shall see. I also got a couple flowering ferns because right as I went to purchase at that booth, they doubled the number of roots for the same price! Lucky me 😀

I’ve never heard of a She Shed – what is that, just a nice shed? LOVE that blue orchid, and seeing the cyclamen brought back memories of living in southern California, where I had them growing in the ground…definitely didn’t appreciate the variety of plants that we could grow year-round back then!

What a fantastic looking show Lori. Hobbiton looks so cute. I’m wanting to get across the ditch and see the real Hobbiton (in NZ) as you can stay in some parts of it. Hobbiton always seems so sweet and idyllic. Love your buy for your garden. Here they are called ‘girl sheds’ and are pretty popular with artists seeking space to mess up. 🙂 I’m like you though not sure why the shed’s have to have a gender….

when I saw that final photo on facebook all all all I could think was I wanted (needed?) to live there.
    LOVE the tiny.
    NEED me a girl-shed.

That’s a nice way to start spring! Just think, if you took Savonology to this show, you’d be surrounded by that beauty for four days.

I was kind of surprised he recognized me and remembered our conversation about the flower show — although, he did stare at my face for a few hours LOL

Wow that’s such a lovely show and the little houses are so cute!

If you ever plan to visit the Netherlands, make sure it’s in Spring. We have something that’s called “De Keukenhof” that has a huge flower show too. You can check the link here: http://www.keukenhof.nl/en/

We are still using your soap, the second piece is almost gone. I only use it in the bathroom for washing our hands/face with it. We both love it. I might just order some more when the last piece is almost gone.

If we meet in Ireland, I can bring soap with me. Or – even if we can’t meet, it’s probably cheaper for me to ship from there to you than from the US 😀

      1. Fran

We will work it out 🙂 but this time I will pay for the soap and shipping costs so it doesn’t really matter where you send it from. Giving it to me in person is of course the best thing 🙂

What a great time – I love, love the oatmeal soap I bought from you – I’ll need to reorder some more if that’s possible! 😀

Nice pics, Lori! I especially liked seeing the fantasy flowers and Hobbiton. The hobbit home with the yellow door, yeah, I want me one. Thanks for sharing this fun post.
