Word for 2018 and goals

Today is finally the last of the deep chill. We might actually be in the 30s by mid week. Yay!  This was the temp this morning:

We went out for our usual breakfast on Sunday. Normally we walk downtown, but -20 is ****ing cold, even without any windchill factor.  Your eyelashes and nose hairs freeze and it hurts to breathe deep.  How I look forward to 30 degrees coming up. Perspective 😀

I chose a word that I want to represent 2018 for me and I decided on Titan.  Not Saturn’s moon or mythology, but the definition of a person of great strength. That’s my mantra for 2018. I will be a titan.

As far as goals go, these are some things I want to work towards this year:

  1. Eat more vegetables.  I seem to do this goal every couple of years. I just need to remind myself to eat them and make sure I have frozen veggies in the freezer at all times so no excuses.  Hello broccoli!
  2. Read 15 books.  I was not able to complete my challenge last year. I just found myself too tired at night to do the amount of reading that I like to do and then extra time was spent working on the businesses.  Reading is a good way to make myself take a break.  Not only reading 15 books, but I’d like half of them to be classics. First up is Sense and Sensibility.
  3. Work on an organizational system.  I am really not the most organized person. I tend to have too many things going on all at once and in various stages of completion. This is going to take a lot of work LOL.
  4. Continue being an advocate for the environment.  I started the year off with purchasing wool dryer balls to reduce fabric softener use:  Supporting a small maker on Etsy with this purchase, too.
  5. Spend time with body weight exercises and stretching on a regular basis. Pretty self explanatory.

That’s pretty good for the year, I think.  I also will get back to reading blogs more regularly. That took such a back seat and I’m sorry I haven’t been reading your blogs!

Do you have a word for 2018?

Not a word Lori.. I like the ‘idea’ of choosing a word but a word never really got me anywhere.. And i don’t like to call them resolutions… Lets call it intentions… I intend to do quite a few things… eat less… move more.. and like you i have many things in various stages of completion and i intend to complete alot more… I like your word though .. we should all strive to be a titan. 🙂 Hugs! deb

This is the first year I’ve ever chosen a word – and didn’t even realize I’d actually chosen one until I kept using it descriptively and on Insta.

    “Determined”

I am sure you will thank your Titan self for getting yourself better organized and for taking some time to read. I’ve actually been trying to alternate real books with Kindle so that I’m not always looking at a screen. Interesting to me is the fact that I’ve actually been reading the real books faster.

I find I read real books faster as well. I think it’s easier to fall into a story in my mind with a real book versus a screen.

Titan is a great word! It’s a good one-word mantra, too. Titan. I like how it feels in the mouth. I’m going to try to be less fearful of the future, so maybe my word should be “fearless.” I graduate in May with a master’s and already I’m thinking no one will hire me. How will I pay my bills? I’m going to be homeless, I just know it! See? I need some fearless in my life.

What are your thoughts on audible books? I’ve only listened to two books in my life and that was in the 90s. I have friends who swear by them, that they’d never “read” all the books they listen to. I don’t know….it feels like cheating.

Thanks for the tip on the wool laundry ball!

I like audible books because I can have them on while I’m working or doing stuff. I used to listen to more until I started transcribing because then, duh, I couldn’t listen to them anymore LOL. Now that I don’t do that – I certainly could do some audible listening.

I love your goals! I agree with all of them, and I love the idea of having a word for the year. Good word. 🙂

We have those dryer balls. I am on the fence with them…they do work well in that clothes aren’t wrinkled and they dry faster. But they still have static cling…

I am glad your frigid weather is easing up! And I just finished cleaning out my desk filing drawer, which I had to force myself to do. I am fairly organized, but keeping up with end-of-year stuff seems overwhelming when I begin. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t. Whew! Anyway, I like your goals!

Enjoyed your 2018 list. I’m still working on mine.

I can’t decide if I should use ‘recover’ or ‘chortle’ for the year. I had two complex surgeries in 2017 & I’m still dragging around. Laughter helps ?.

Wishing you, John & Pixie a lovely New Year.

So for the last three years I have taken at least one class a semester, working on a PhD. That’s 14 books per class. And when you write a paper for each class, an additional 10-15 books per paper. A minimum of 290 books since Fall 2014.

That pales in comparison to the 500 or more additional books I must plow through in preparation for my comprehensive exams, which I will sit for in October 2018. I wonder if I will ever want to read again once this degree is completed?????

Hello! Somehow I was missing your posts in December; probably due to my online shopping appearing to have signed me up for all kinds of junk mail. Ugh.

I don’t always pick a word for the year, but I did this year: focus.

Lori, I feel I have the head space to really dedicate to my health again. After some worrisome, struggle-filled years things are beginning to settle and I am ready to fight for my old new-Leah life back. It’s a good feeling, but it will take focus.

I’m so glad you are still blogging and I can see what you’re up to. You inspire me and I’m hoping I’ve learned some of what not to repeat so when I lose this weight again I won’t regain it when all hell breaks loose in my life.

    Happy New Year to you!

I like your word! I don’t have one word, but I did say ‘Mindfulness & Movement’ is my motto for 2018. Mindfulness in that I need to learn to live in the moment, enjoy things as they come. Focus on now. I always seem to be thinking of what’s coming next…good or bad. It even affects my work in that I’m thinking about everything to do instead of just doing it! Not really ideal. And ‘movement’ just because I need to get myself in gear and get moving! So I have one habit to develop – mindfulness and one to break – laziness 😉
    Happy New Year you Titan!

That’s funny because I read more books since I have my ereader.
I had the stupid habit to often look a few pages ahead how the story continues if I stopped reading for the day and sometimes read the end of the book already. With the ereader I don’t do that anymore, to much swiping LOL. I had a goal of reading 12 books last year and I did read them. My goal this year is 12 again.

I can’t even imagine how cold -20F is because we never had such temperatures here but together with the snow it must be very, very cold. Hopefully it’s better by now.

Love your goals for this year.
