Maine trip part deux

We got into Maine and had a place booked in Kennebunk. We used Airbnb to book a place. It was called Songbird Suite, so if you go there, check out Ann’s place. The room was nice and not too far from the main area of Kennebunk. A much, much better experience than our last Airbnb.

Kennebunkport is a cute town.

Of course, it’s very touristy, but when it’s not crowded it’s fun. It was breezy and cloudy while we were here.

We visited the ocean, of course. It was low tide when we got there and there was a little surf.

Did you know you can take a selfie with a Rebel? I hadn’t ever tried it before, but it worked, other than being super awkward holding it.

us

My head looks huge. It seems whomever takes the selfie has the biggest head in pictures LOL!

I was taking pictures of John at the water’s edge. He stood on a rock thinking it was far enough from the waves. It wasn’t and this was John looking down at his feet after the wave washed over them.

jwater

Oops. Good thing his shoes were waterproof!

There were 2 things that were a must for me on this trip. One was a trip back to Congdon’s donuts. The best donuts ever!

congdon

I couldn’t care less about how many calories are in these. They are soooo good!

We did some walking in Ogunquit and then headed out to see the Nubble lighthouse:

nubble

It still shows a light:

I wonder if it looks like the Eye of Sauron from the front. :0

It was time to head home and we stopped at Beach Plum for a later lunch (donuts were filling!). This was the 2nd thing I wanted this trip. A lobster roll:

lobsterroll

I love these. Beach Plum does a good job with them, too. Very little dressing to let the lobster flavor come out. This is a 6 ounce roll. Still $18, though!  These things are expensive, which is probably good because I would eat more of them LOL.

It was nice to get away, but far too short a trip.

Maine trip!

John and I took a quick trip this weekend over to Maine for a little getaway. It was nice to get out of town. Not that I mind working on our house on the weekends because I like to, but that means I don’t always relax since I can always find something to do.

Of course, part of the fun of a trip is stopping along the way in interesting places. Well, this was a tiny bit out of the way, but totally worth it.  King Arthur Flour campus in Norwich, Vermont.

We have been here before and that’s why we came back! It’s a school and retail shop all in one.

kaf

There are viewing areas to see what they are making that day.  In this one, the back person is doing pizzas and the front ones are panning bread:

kaf3

In another window we saw this:

kaf4

At first we thought it was some kind of pastry dough, but the we realized that is butter!  They make their own croissant/puff pastry dough and they feed flats of butter into a big folder with sheets of dough.

Here is a worker smoothing the butter into a mold.

kaf5

Then they end up on those trays to be chilled. That’s a lot of butter!

There is the retail shop were you can buy every single mix that they have, plus all kinds of kitchen gadgets and dough enrichments to make the best bread you can at home.

These tins were pretty cool:

kaf8

There is also the cafe area. They serve breakfast and lunch, plus pastries! Everything is fun looking, too.

kaf6

We grabbed a couple treats to go and man oh man were these good! Cinnamon puffs:

cpuff

It was like a coffee cake, but light and melts in your mouth. Yum!

We headed for our next stop, which was Portsmouth. We were really hungry for lunch by this time and stopped at our favorite place whenever going through Portsmouth.

ft

My lunch was cayenne cheddar toast topped with chipotle sweet potatoes, veggie sausage and 2 eggs.

ft1

I have to figure out how to recreate this at home.

John got the Greek yogurt pancakes:

ft2

These were really good. Infused with orange. Yes, that looks like a lot and it was. John couldn’t finish them.

These meals actually ended up being lunch and dinner since we ate later than usual and these were pretty filling.

Portsmouth is really a great town.

Bridge over to Maine!

I don’t want to overload you with pictures, so I’ll continue with another post.

Weekend Getaway in Portsmouth!

I have been so wiped out lately that when John suggested a weekend getaway the weekend of my birthday, he didn’t have to twist my arm very hard!  When we took our driving trip up in New England last year, we both really enjoyed Portsmouth, New Hampshire – so that was where we decided to come back to.  I worked right up until the time we left and actually everything was pretty well caught up for the first time in a couple of months (although that didn’t stop them from called me to work on Sunday).

Portsmouth is very charming. It is a very old city and not a huge city, so really just about perfect for a quick visit.

Our first stop was dinner, as we were hungry.  I remembered the Beach Plum from last year and that really good lobster roll, so we went there again. Ladies’ choice!! 😀

lobster roll

These are pricey, but oh so good!  John and I split this lobster roll. I think it had 10 ounces of meat on it? I was pretty happy after dinner 😀

The downtown area is where we spent pretty much the rest of our time.  We stayed in a little place we booked through AirBNB, and while it was relatively inexpensive and walkable to downtown, I don’t think I would stay there again. It was a rental unit and not in great condition. The host was nice, though.

Anyway, downtown Portsmouth is full of charm. Lots of shops and eateries.

Of course, the boats.

The city itself has tons of old buildings, which you know I love.  The shopping is fun, too, with all the nooks and crannies filled with little boutiques.

WP_20140607_001

Tons of breweries, too!

WP_20140606_019

This sandwich board was highly amusing to me and I don’t know why.

We had to stop back at Friendly Toast!

WP_20140607_042

This place is fun.  I got an omelet that came with toast. I chose the cheddar cayenne bread.

WP_20140607_046

I seriously could bathe in this bread – it is sooooo good!  It’s a good thing we walked a lot this weekend. 😉

We found a very interesting open house at the the Moffit-Ladd house, which turned out to be really fun. I learned more about pigeons than I thought could be learned.  I had no idea that people actually bred pigeons like they do dogs and there are over 500 varieties!

WP_20140607_040

People used to (and still do, apparently) raise pigeons for food. This is an example of a pigeon barn.

WP_20140607_036

They would put boxes up on the inside and when pigeons fly into the holes and laid their eggs you could get them from the inside.

This was one of the bedrooms in the house.

WP_20140607_041

Tres cool.

There were tons of flowers in bloom in town, too.

It’s so different being by the sea than by a lake.  John was saying how the sea is just enchanting and I think he is right.

Tomorrow I will talk about the museum complex we went to called Strawberry Banke, but that’s enough for today!

Hello routine, nice to see you!

Back in regular mode today!  Yesterday was a long travel day.  We had a flight that left at noon (and of course you need to be at the airport early), which ended up being delayed.  We took the same plane from Denver to Baltimore, which went on to Albany, so there was no real meal all day long.  Just some snacks and a protein bar I brought with.  When we finally arrived in Albany at around 8, we had a really snowy drive home.  Yuck!  A few white knuckle moments, but we made it home around 9:30 pm.  I can’t believe how a whole day can be spent traveling!

While we thoroughly enjoyed the trip, it is nice to be back in our own routines.  The family was nice enough to get some oats and fresh ground peanut butter for us to have for breakfast, so I ate a lot of oats while there LOL!  We did eat out a lot, and John and I shared some entrees.   We also ran 2 days and went to the rec center one day so I could do a little lifting.  I was totally shocked that I was able to run at altitude without needing to walk.  We ran approximately 3.5 miles when we went out.   Took it a little slower knowing we were at altitude, plus just being a little tired from lack of sleep).

So today I woke up and needed to shovel for exercise!  I ended up getting the whole driveway done myself, and I was happy to let John sleep in since he drove home last night.  That was most of my exercise for today.  Then I came in to see what could be scrounged up for breakfast.  It’s pantry and freezer staple day as we are desperate for groceries!

I had pumpkin cream of wheat (no egg whites, though) topped with some almonds, cranberry sauce and some honey.

I found this honey at Celestial Seasonings – and you all know there was no way I would pass it up!

Love! It tastes like eggnog that has honey in it – yay!

Hit the ground running with work today.  It’s like I never left…

Scrounged the freezer for lunch – fish cake and roasted broccoli with applesauce.

Gotta have the hot sauce!

Ms. Pixie is now glad to have us home.  My mom took good care of her while we were away.

She seemed a little pissed at us last night, though.  She didn’t want a lap or anything last night.  This morning, she was at the bedroom door and squawking loudly wanting her food and to be held.

Now she seems happy to be beside me while I work, looking pretty festive, too!

John made lattes in the afternoon, which I had with some unpictured dark chocolate mint cups.

Made with Caribou Coffee, which we picked up while in CO.  I miss Caribou!  I feel tired today.  Funny how trips can really wear you out, you know?

Scrounging again for dinner.  I did have the forethought to pull out some ground pork last night, so at least we had some meat for dinner.  I was snacking on chips while cooking, too.  I know it is supposed to be a myth that you can stretch out your stomach, but I feel like I did the past few days.

I made an open-faced BBQ pork sandwich with laughing cow on a pita.

Plus a bowl of pears.  I have decided that I only like fresh pears.  Processed pears have a funny texture to me.

I am so lame that I am excited to grocery shop tonight LOL!  I want strawberries and pears!  So it is off to market now.

The reverb.10 thought for today:
