Book Review: The Diet Fix

This review is long overdue. I actually was trying to get it done yesterday, but all the thinking I have to do when writing a review was hurting my head, so I switched over to the settee update (more fun, although messier) and figured I would talk about it today. Then I read a post by Debby referencing this very book!

Anyway – I found that amusing, which proves it doesn’t take much.  🙄

Here is the book.

The Diet Fix: Why Diets Fail and How to Make Yours Work (amazon affiliate link)

I have followed Dr. Yoni Freedhoff’s blog, Weighty Matters, for quite a while.  I have even quoted it on the blog a few times because he just makes a lot of sense.  So, when he came out with a book, I was quite intrigued to read it. In fact, I actually bought a copy instead of waiting for it to come to my local library.

I have to say that he should have named the book differently. It makes it sound like it is a diet book in the traditional sense, which it is not. However, I suppose a book entitled “The every day things you can do to lose weight slowly and sensibly and live happily” wouldn’t really sell, right?

The Diet Fix has 3 parts to it. The first part talks about the issues with diets and why they fail. He often states the term traumatic dieter for people who have dieted on and off for most of their lives (which is a lot of us).  He points out many of the reasons people are unable to succeed with certain types of diets or mindsets about diets and how we tend to turn these things into self degradation.

The second part is implementing a 10 step reset plan to help you succeed. He says 10 steps in 10 days, but really some steps you can take a long time to get down. Not a lot of information is new information to serial dieters, but it is presented in a cohesive way with some additions that make sense.  Seems like I keep saying this makes sense, doesn’t it? Guess that is the theme here.  Things like a food diary (but without judgement), planning meals and snacks with protein to head hunger off before it comes on, how to handle social situations, exercise, etc.

The last section of the book goes into more detail about nutrition and how to to change your mindset about food and exercise (and other people who might sabatoge you), medical conditions and medications that can affect your weight, and a bonus section of recipes from Dr. Freedhoff’s wife.

My biggest personal takeaways from this book were:

1. Incorporate a morning snack. This is something that I always felt I shouldn’t need since I eat a bigger breakfast and should be able to last until lunch. Well, that isn’t always the case and I could be ravenous a couple hours after breakfast. Instead of fighting that, I have decided to make my breakfast just a bit smaller and have a timed mid morning snack (about 150 calories) that includes protein.

2. I think more than anything else this book is about behavior. Not really so much what you are eating, although that is important. It’s setting yourself up for success with a series of tools no matter what eating plan you want to follow.

3.  The biggest and most important thing? Your best weight may not be what everyone else tells you it should be. Your best weight is whatever weight you reach while you are living the healthiest life you can actually enjoy. Suffering should not ever be a part of a diet.

So in a nutshell, I did like this book. I think it has a lot to offer, really especially if you have been a lifelong dieter and have the suffering mentality and beating yourself up.

Settee update

So, I showed the picture of my settee that I picked up for $18 at auction with the thoughts of reupholstering it. Even though I said I wasn’t going to buy anymore furniture before we moved, right? Promises, promises. $18, people! How could I not get it?

settee

I liked the shape and the wood detail and figured with a new covering and restaining the legs it would be pretty cool to put in the little room that will be off our new living room.

WP_20140620_006

I was a bit concerned because this was a little more than I was thinking of doing for my first upholstery try.  Turns out I didn’t need to worry…

I used a marker and wrote a number code on all the pieces so that I could use them as a pattern for a new cover and actually remember how to put it back together.  Then I carefully pulled apart the fabric and saw another layer under it.

WP_20140620_015

Okay then. More work to do!

WP_20140620_019

So then I peel off that layer and I see this:

WP_20140620_017

By this point I was all WTF? I also noticed when I grasped the piece that it felt like a wooden frame underneath that had a shape to it and I began to suspect that I had a totally different piece than I thought.  So no, Jeannie, it wasn’t a bag of money I found (how cool would that have been!?!?).

I pulled this corner off to see and I find this:

WP_20140620_018

By this point, the dust was pretty bad from all this old fabric and I was wearing a mask.

WP_20140621_002

I think the patient will live.

WP_20140620_020

By this point I was just ripping off the fabric because I knew I wasn’t going to be putting it back together the way I found it.  I got everything off except for the very original seat cover.

WP_20140620_022

This was the settee’s original form and it looks very cool. I did take off the last cover with it’s padding (straw!). I saved that for a template to recover the seat.

WP_20140621_004

Please excuse the old girl – she was very dirty in this shot. I can save all the springs. They just need to be retied.  So, what I thought was going to be a big upholstery project is turning into a stripping and staining project.  I think you can see a bit in this picture all the nail and tack holes from 3 layers of fabric on this. Some of the wood around the seat that will be showing is not in good shape. I am going to try to fill the holes and stain them, but I may actually have to paint the wood because I don’t know if all the patch work will take the dark stain and look good. I have to wait and see.

I can’t believe someone didn’t like how this looked and covered it up.

WP_20140621_007

So, I have spent time this week with varnish stripper and a tooth brush working to clean it up. Hopefully this weekend I will patch the wood and see if I can stain it or have to paint it.  If I do paint – it will be gloss black.

I told John I should do furniture flipping instead of house flipping 😀

46 mile ride

What a gorgeous, gorgeous weekend!  I was glad to have my biking partner back for Saturday 😀

WP_20140621_008

We did just kind of a loop around ride aiming for 40+ miles.

WP_20140621_025

Most of it was road riding, but we did hit a small portion of a path called the Betar bikeway. It’s only a little over a mile long, but it runs along the river and is so pretty.  You can peek to Glens Falls:

WP_20140621_012

It’s a nice paved path and lots of people on it on Saturday.  There is a group that meets there monthly to do bird watching and I keep thinking I will try it some time, but never have gotten around to it.

WP_20140621_014

Of course, all the birdies needed to look out because this guy was walking around like he owned the place!

WP_20140621_013

He was talkative and friendy. I always find the kittehs.

We headed south then to Schuylerville.

This goes along the canal and we saw a boat headed. We actually were biking faster than this boat was going. Not sure if that is sad or not LOL!

WP_20140621_020

Along route 4 is a an osprey nest. They currently have babies and the mom was not thrilled about us. We weren’t very close, but she was pretty vocal.

osprey

When we got to Schuylerville, we stopped at Espresso Huis for our ride snack!

WP_20140621_022

This was a Boston cream cuppie and really, really good! Of course, riding always makes everything taste better 😀

I also admired the pottery for sale by a local artist.

WP_20140621_021

Biking = no buying, right?

Powered by cupcakes and coffee, it was time to head back.  We actually were a little tired on this ride. I think it was because we went about 30 miles before our snack and we didn’t take a lot of breaks.

Fluffy clouds!

WP_20140621_026

About 3 miles from home, I got a cramp in my left thigh (the weak one). I have never had that happen while biking before. We had to stop and stretch so I could work it out.  Thank goodness it was close to home.  Only 1 last steeper hill to get up before we were done.

WP_20140621_027

Look at that – the 46 miles I didn’t get to do on my birthday, just a couple weeks late 😀

What’s Blooming!

It’s Astilbe time around Casa Radiance this week!  The front garden is a little quiet on the big showy flowers now that the irises are done. Lots of rose blooms, though.

The scentimental:

WP_20140619_007

My rose bush I planted last year. It’s filling in nicely.  Note the black sprite centaurea not doing so well next to it. Not sure what is up with that.

Little closer:

My new pink knockout I just planted a few weeks ago:

Happy gaillarda that freely seeded itself along the walk:

WP_20140619_016

Sundrops. These are very short this year. I don’t think they cared much for the winter.

WP_20140619_008

And the Astilbe! Now behind the white are 2 other colors, but they are smaller and not quite blooming yet. They actually will be nice and full next year. The white ones are nice mature astilbe.  This is one of those flowers that I love, but forget how much I love them until they are in bloom.

WP_20140619_006

They love this spot. They get morning sun and evening sun and shade during the day.

WP_20140619_003

So fluffy and pretty!

WP_20140619_004

And now for my latest project.  I got this settee to reupholster. I won the bid at a local shop for $18!  What a steal.

WP_20140620_005

It is going to look very, very different than this. Really different.  Just a tease, but this piece had a surprise in store for me.  😀

Another year down.

More time has passed in this weight loss journey. I think this is my 6th year? I still have my rose.

100 pound rose

Funny that I am not all that focused on the time passing. This last year was a little harder for me. More the last 6 months, really, particularly with work stress and the never ending house closing. However, there are some things that have stayed constant all this time. Exercise is really a daily part of my life. Not always all out exercise. Sometimes simple walking. Other times 30-40 mile bike rides. It’s just what I do now. I have gotten a little lax with food, which has always been and probably always will be my biggest sticking point.

Obligatory what I used to look like photos:

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA250

I was thinking about pictures and decided against doing the ‘get myself gussied up’ and pose picture and show pictures of me being me. The real me!

WP_20140531_048

I am even willing to post a picture of me from behind – a shot I had no idea was being taken. In the past, I would never have put up a picture like this, but this is me and I don’t hide. I am not a supermodel, but I am pretty super 😀

Loribike

Losing weight and keeping it off is hard. I have a lot of support through the ups and downs of trying to maintain or when I have to get back into losing mode. I have that support offline as well as very much here with the blog, which I thank you all so, so much for.  When I named my blog, I didn’t want to give it a ‘weight loss’ kind of name because I realized that the journey doesn’t start and end with the scale. It’s the whole package of how you live your life. How you live your life and enjoy your life – despite where you are on the scale.

Here to keeping on.

WP_20140605_021

My new hat

John is back home again and all is back to what is normal for us at any rate. 🙂  Here is Pixie all kinds of happy to be sitting with both of us this evening.

Pixie

You can’t hear through a picture, but she was purring like a machine!

Day of food accountability today!  Haven’t done that in a while, but my eats have been fairly boring lately.  I started off with the usual protein waffles:

WP_20140617_001

I decided to go to the gym in the mid morning today. There was a ton of work to do, but I wasn’t the only one working on the account, so I wanted to get to the gym before it got really hot out (it hit 86 degrees today!!). I grabbed a homemade protein bar and headed out.  I am so glad I didn’t wait because it already was pretty warm.

Lunch time and it was time for more protein. I am trying to make sure I get a lot of protein on lifting days. This is a turkey burger with laughing cow on top. A lot of people ask me what that is on my burgers. It’s just a mashed wedge of cheese 🙂

WP_20140617_002

This actually is a typical dinner, but I figured I would eat a larger lunch and have a lighter dinner due to the heat. I don’t know about any of you, but the heat makes me lose my appetite pretty fast.

I got a package today! But first, a little back story.  A few years ago, I borrowed a race hat from my sister. I don’t even remember why, but probably we wanted to go out in public after a race and I needed something to hide my hair LOL. Anyway, I somehow commandeered the hat and it is the one you normally see when I am out biking and have taken my helmet off. I also wear it to the gym. It is looking the worse for wear now:

WP_20140617_004

I keep asking Colleen if she wants it back, but she declines. I don’t understand why…

Anyway, I was watching the Criterium du Dauphine bike race during the last week – which was totally exciting, BTW! – and there was a 30% discount code for Head Sweats. They have Tour de France performance hats and so I decided to pull the trigger and order one!

Ta Da!!

WP_20140617_005

I love my new hat! These are nice and light and adjustable in the back, too. Way better than any kind of baseball cap.

It doesn’t take much to excite me…

Then there is the bad news. In a first world problem of epic proportions, the espresso machine is broken. It has been a little iffy for a while and now it just won’t work at all.  So, my snack was something brought to me by John from the Bellagio buffet in Vegas.

WP_20140617_003

Hooray for day old cookies LOL! Such a good hubby 😀

The rest of my work day sped by. The nice thing about being busy is that it can go fast, especially when the work is easier and not one of those days where I am pulling my hair out. It was quick supper time.

WP_20140617_006

Greek yogurt and apple topping! See, I told you my eats lately have been pretty standard.

Now for a relaxing evening with John home and a snack! Hooray!

Solo riding!

John was boiling away in Vegas with temps in the 90s and higher (eek!) and we had upper 60s and low 70s. Perfect temps for biking, although it was a bit breezy. I was so glad the rain finally passed through so I could get on the bike!

WP_20140614_002

Ready to roll!

The paths were still kind of wet, especially in the shady parts.

WP_20140614_004

This is a coal silo restoration project along the path:

WP_20140614_003

The canal is really high right now. I don’t know how they route the water because the Hudson can be really high and the canal will be low, even if it rains. However, now it is really full.

WP_20140614_005

While I was riding, I got a call from John, so I stopped at some outside tables for a chat!

WP_20140614_009

There is a cool building for sale nearby as well:

WP_20140614_008

Wouldn’t it be cool to fix this up and live in the top and have some cool artist shops below?

I headed towards Lake George, but turned around before the big downhill parts because the path was freshly black topped last year and it gets mossy and slick when there are days of rain, so I just played it safe since I was alone.

WP_20140614_012

It was time for my treat!  I headed to Martha’s for the first time this year.

WP_20140614_013

Nom, nom, nom!

WP_20140614_017

I swung back around to Glens Falls and decided to check out the LARAC festival. I was going to go on Sunday, but decided to scope it out on Saturday instead.

WP_20140614_023

Always interesting stuff.

WP_20140614_022

I love these little mushrooms. They look giant in the picture, but really are about a foot tall.

WP_20140614_024

Someone also had handmade guitars there, which I haven’t ever seen at this show before.

WP_20140614_020

They guy said “Go ahead and play!”  So I picked one up and noodled a little bit, even though it was not the type of guitar I play.  It had steel strings – owie!!. Then I asked the man how much they were and he said $4000!!  😯   He was letting anyone pick them up and play them, such as my sweaty bikey self, and I don’t know how he had the nerve to do that with how much they were!

Good thing about biking is that I think 3 times before buying something because it has to make it home 🙂  I decided I don’t really need to be buying anything right now as we need to save lots of pennies for the things we have to have in our new house. So, it was time to pedal home.

WP_20140614_028

Quick detour to a part of the path I don’t go on too often.  You can see the path winding down. Those moutains way in the back are Vermont:

WP_20140614_035

Home!

WP_20140614_036

Bonus manicure shot!  I totally forgot to get my stats off the computer and then I reset it on Sunday for that day’s ride, so all I have is the total mileage of 30.1 miles! And a very enjoyable day!

What’s Blooming!

It was a rainy last half of the week. Really, the spring has been rainy and while it doesn’t help biking, it sure makes everything green!

WP_20140613_008

Lots and lots of lawn clover 😀

My campanula are blooming. These are hugely tall this year, although you can see how knocked over they got from the rain yesterday.  Here they are standing up:

campanula

They have the very faintest blush of purple in them.

campanula

The 100-pound rose is in bloom:

WP_20140610_009

And the scentimental rose:

WP_20140610_004

I have forgotten the name of this rose that I planted last year. I need to go look that up.

WP_20140610_005

My container plants are looking good.

WP_20140613_010

I was a little uninspired for my other tippy pots and put in some coleus and allysum :

WP_20140613_011

Hopefully that will fill in nicely.  My geraniums:

WP_20140613_012

Don’t you love that ‘gray’ back porch?  We fell into the trap of buying a gray color that ended up looking way too blue once we painted and now we need to get a different one. We’ll just call that the primer 😀

Last gasp of the Tiger Honey:

WP_20140613_009

I need to get in there and do more weeding. If only I could find a patch of good weather where I wasn’t working or biking LOL!

My orchid is still going with 2 blooms on it.  Yay!

orchid

The skies are supposed to be clear and I will be biking this weekend for sure!

Random Thursday

Isn’t it amazing how you go on a mini vacation to recharge and then you feel almost the same again a couple days after you get back? LOL!  I hit the ground running with work Monday morning. It’s still really, really busy, but at least not screaming at us busy, so there’s something. 🙂

John just left this morning (Thursday) for Vegas and will get back at midnight on Monday. He took the Saturn down and left it at the airport so I wouldn’t have to come pick him up that late on Monday.  He said he is getting a bit tired of traveling and I don’t blame him. That also means that tomorrow and Monday I have to keep his business running at a minimal level on top of my own work and tutoring (packing and shipping orders mostly).

It was good getting back to lifting this week. I hadn’t lifted since last Tuesday since I rode 20 miles on Thursday for my birthday instead of my usual lifting workout. I went on Tuesday and today and thought I might be sore, but I wasn’t.  Yay!

Pixie supervising my work today.

WP_20140612_002

“You’re doing real good, mom! Now where is my catnip?”

We have been discussing the budget for the new house as far as what work we need to do to it (a lot) and what are the things we have to do to get it up and running for us and what can wait to do over time.  Furnishing the house is going to be a bit of a challenge and I want quality stuff for this house.  I think that means I might have to try my hand at upholstery on at least some pieces, so that should be interesting at any rate.

My mom went in for eye surgery today, so I am cooking a dinner for my parents tomorrow night. She said it went well and hopefully will get her vision back to normal.

I am ready for the weekend already!

Strawberry Banke

Among the many things that I learned this weekend, and it turned out to be a real learnin’ time, I found out that Portsmouth was originally called Strawberry Banke. The reason was that when the settlers arrived in 1630, there were masses of wild strawberries all over.  Then they decided that a shipping and business hub needed to have a more ‘professional’ name and so changed it to Portsmouth. I actually like the name Strawberry Banke better.

Anyhoo, back in the 1950s when urban renewal was  in, all of the old buildings in the Puddle Dock area were going to be torn down for new construction. This was the oldest neighborhood in Portsmouth. A group of people bought the 10 acres of the property and have been working on restoring all of the old buildings and created the outdoor museum complex of Strawberry Banke.

WP_20140607_018

There are 36 buildings and they left all the buildings were they stood except for several homes that were moved from another site to be saved from demolition, like the Governor Goodwin mansion.

WP_20140608_001

Can you believe a developer was going to tear this down?   😯  Unbelievable. It was saved and brought to Strawberry Banke.  They restored it to period pieces of the late 1700s, I believe.

WP_20140607_011

Including an old kitchen.  Pretty spacious, too!

WP_20140607_013

They also recreated his wife’s garden based upon her writing, including a greehouse with period plants.

WP_20140607_017

Of course, I had to find the resident kitteh! His name was George? and he was very friendly.

WP_20140607_016

Each of the houses was different in terms of what year it was brought back to look like.  Some buildings were left as is to show building construction. Some were done in older periods.

WP_20140607_021

Some were relatively newer.

WP_20140607_028

There was the general store, which was stocked as it would be in the 1940s.

WP_20140607_029

Several of the places had period characters that would describe life in the time period they were in, including the grocer who told us about the rationing and how hard it was to get certain foods like butter and milk.

The nice thing about Strawberry Banke is that your admission ticket is good for 2 days. So, we saw some on Saturday and then went back Sunday morning.  It was neat because we were there right when it opened on Sunday and got pretty much private talks, which was neat!

Demonstrations also were done like blacksmithing, gardening, weaving and cooking.

WP_20140607_030

We went to a weaving cottage and saw all the old machinery.

WP_20140608_006

We were the only ones there, so the guide let us take a chance on the small looms.

WP_20140608_004

That was fun, but I don’t see me wanting to buy a loom. 😀

WP_20140607_026

BTW, the flags were to designate which buildings were open for visitors that day.  Some buildings are still being restored. Definitely a very good place to visit. Admission was $17.50, although we saved $3 with a coupon.  It’s nice having the option of going both days.

Bye Portsmouth!  We enjoyed our weekend!

WP_20140607_056
